If you want to try a Chipmunk Jersey Aero Club (How about a cheap flight down with BMI Baby) are offering £125 p/h Dual and £107 p/h Solo.

Hope the above helps.

FNG: I don't know about Warmunks! Certainly there have been many armed Harvards / T6s, including those that flew in combat (esp. Korea). I seem to recall (?) that at least a few Stearmans flew in combat, too ... although I can't provide specifics off the top of my head.

MLS-12D, Where in Canada are you? I get over there a bit and might be interested in jumping in the Harvard if poss.
I have sent foxmoth a PM, but in case anyone else was wondering: I am in Toronto, and the Harvards are located in the small town of Tillsonburg, some two hours west of here.

I am still a conversion pilot on the Harvard, so unfortunately I can't offer to take any of you up, should you happen to visit southern Ontario. Hopefully, that will change soon. In the interim, backseat rides can be arranged with other pilots. Sorry, front seat flying is restricted to qualified pilots and those undergoing conversion training.

Hey Bill (Ladies aeroplane driver)

And there was me thinking you wanted a flight in a YAK.

Insult a mans woman - fair game (just don't let her hear you)

Insult a mans aeroplane :ouch:

All the best

Updated, for aeros machines...

If it's comfortable, it's French.
If it's capable, it's German.
If it's comfortable and capable, it doesn't exist.

(And if it's a small shouty dog that won't shut up - it's probably a Pitts) :}

Thanks all for the info,

Yakker, I have to say I like the look of the Yak 52. Skytrace obviously do Yak 52 training in my area, but do they hire out the A/C for solo? I only ask as it seems most of their work is targetted at owners and I'm guessing that their aircraft is permit as opposed to CofA.

Ham,

I've flown in a hawk quite a bit, I just couldn't put it in my civil logbook:ok:

The bang per buck theme seems to be more prevelant than out and out warbird flying, so does anyone know of any bulldog/Cap10/chipmunk operated on a CofA and therfore hireable in the midlands area.

Tatenhill has a decathalon available, which whilst not a warbird seems to be a nice aircraft. Anyone any comments on these A/C?

MLS-12D

I believe that Obs cop is looking for a place that he can rent an airplane for solo flying ("train up in and then hire an old warbird").
Consider that nail hit on the head:)

Thanks again for all the replies, as I continue my quest to diversify from the usual GA fleet.

Regards

Obs cop

I think that there may be a Chipmunk somewhere in the Midlands (Coventry?). There used to be one at Wycombe. Otherwise you have to travel: for Cap 10s to Cambridge, Sherburn or Waltham; for Bulldogs to North Weald, Old Sarum or Kemble. I don't know of any Yaks on public C of As. There is a rentable Citabria operated by poetpilot at Liverpool. Sywell has a Pitts and at least one Moth, I think.

Derby Aero Club have an ex-Botswanan Bulldog, looks the biz in very tatty camo paint and goes well although sadly not for solo hire. They do have a Pup 150 though for solo hire.

Tatenhill's Decathlon was in bits last week (I was supposed to be flying it) it might be fixed now.

Phoenix Flying School at Nethersludge also have a Pup 150 and
Sheffield Aero Club next door have a Firefly.

There's a Chipmunk at East Mids (Three Point Aviation) but I don't
know if it's available solo.
I believe there's also a Chipmunk at Sheffield.

I know a Pup isn't a warbird but they are nice to fly and there's couple for hire in the midlands.

If it's capable, efficient, fast and sexy, it's a Diamond TwinStar!

Now where's me chequebook?

:E  :ok:

Obs cop,

Glad to hear that you intend to solo in the warbird of your choice. Personally, I'm not greatly attracted to training in aircraft on a dual-only basis ... IMHO, PIC in a C172 is more significant than flying as a passenger in a [insert name of complicated and expensive airplane here].

Best wishes,

MLS

PM me, I may be able to direct you to a T28 Trojan.

BeauMan 13th July 2004 15:50

Think there's also a Chipmunk at Henlow.

Watching this thread develop with interest, I'm also likely to be looking for an ex-mil trainer group in a few months time. Ideally Cub or Chipmunk, ideally East Anglia.

Yes, there is a Chipmunk at Wycombe, its operated by the British Airways flying club, but I'm not sure if the allow solo hire or not (as I'm a member of the other flying club at WAP)

3 ex Swedish Air Force Bulldogs at Ultimate High (Kemble or Goodwood) - nice colour scheme too!

Not what I'd class as Warbirds though.

ex-RAF Jet Provost in the hangar at Westair, Blackpool if you're that way inclined - or that rich!

Warbird

Don't miss the Vulcan on the way in to Westair!!!

Justiciar 16th July 2004 12:11

Chipmunk, ideally East Anglia.
I have just joined Felthorpe flying group near Norwich, who operate a Chipmunk and I think they are looking for additional members. PM me for more onformation.

ozplane 16th July 2004 13:36

The Cambridge group will do you a PPL on their Tiger Moths and I believe Sywell have got one for check-outs and hire. However do ensure that the a/c are on Public Transport and fully insured. Some of the "Buy my £2000 T-shirt and we'll give you a free ride in our Super Whizz-Bang Special" are probably best avoided. Did I read somewhere that ARC at Duxford were proposing a Chipmunk-Harvard-2-seat Spitfire course like the one at Wanaka mentioned earlier?
