Flying from SHOREHAM!!!!

I'm trying to find somewhere reasonably priced in the South from which to get up to speed with my flying again. I've looked at Popham, Fairoaks, Biggin Hill and Redhill ... now I'm trying to find out about SHOREHAM!!. I've found a few webpages, but not many prices advertised. I'm really just after a C152 for now, to get my confidence back. Then I'll consider doing the P51 conversion. ;)
Does anyone fly from SHOREHAM!!! who can point me in the right direction?

(Disregard all mentions of the word Southend!!)

<<does that help, A.B.?>>

Keef's yer man but no doubt working at the moment! ;) :D

AerBabe 25th January 2004 17:43

Yes, I remembered just after I posted that Private Flying's resident penguin flies from there.
BTW, sent you a PM a while back - did you get it?!

Red Four 25th January 2004 18:58

There's 4 flying clubs at Southend, so the prices tend to remain competitive, (in no particular order);

Seawing Flying Club
Southend Flying Club
Southend School of Flying
Willowair Flying Club

I recall that they each have at least one C152 on strength.

Suggests you visit them and get some quotes, and more importantly whether you like the feel of the club and its instructors/facilities/ambience etc.

SND is quite a trot from where you are, innit?!

Gimme a shout if there's anything I can help with at EGKR...

If your range covers Popham to Sa'fen' there are many that you have missed out. WW, Denham, Blackbushe, Booker/Wycombe, Elstree, Rochester, Stapleford, to name but a few.

I would avoid Fairoaks. The school is very unfriendly (I even found yesterday that the Tower, who used to be very friendly, have become cold, distant and unwelcoming as if their salaries depended on it) and LTFC, who are a pleasant enough club have suffered a shambles with their instructing staff over the last year.

My experience of Redhill is also poor.

There are loads to choose from at Biggin, but trying to do circuits at the weekend can be difficult.

People speak well of WW and Stapleford, mixed reports from Elstree, bad reports from Panshanger.

Landing Fees!

By all means check out the clubs at Saafend, but if I remember correctly, you'll have to pay for each and every landing (£17.50 a pop last time I visited) even if the aircraft is based there.

I'd be surprised if Stapleford wasn't cheaper - the only trouble is, it's full of people like me. :)

Aerbabe, If you haven't been down and looked at the clubhouse notice board, you haven't checked out Popham properly - it's the only faintly complete source of what's available.

Same is arguably true of White Waltham, which is in your area, and often has some very nice cheap shares going. Isn't that where FFF keeps his Europa share?

Hersh - Sarfend is about 45 min drive.
G-SXTY - PW paid just under £13 yesterday ... but that was for a chopper. :hmm:
Genghis - I can't afford a share. :( I will be paying for each lesson as and when I can afford it.
Timothy - Yes, some of those I hadn't considered - thanks for reminding me.

Best to avoid Denham - it already has an air babe. Having two would only cause confusion!

Aerbabe

Get yourself up to Cranfield, 152 for £60/hr solo

G_SXTY, I think you'll find club based aircraft get a discount. Aerbabe I fly from EGMC - e-mail me and i'll give you some more info.....

G SXTY 26th January 2004 04:47

Happy to stand corrected!

White Waltham... Isn't that where FFF keeps his Europa share
Certainly is! (In fact, the whole of the Europa is kept there, not just my share! ;)) I have lots of good things to say about White Waltham, but I wouldn't use the phrase "reasonably priced" to describe them. It's true there are lots of interesting shares there, many of which are cheap, so that might be worth investigating if AerBabe was after a share... but I get the feeling she's looking to rent, rather than buy? In which case, there are plenty of cheaper places around. Not that she wouldn't be welcome, of course!

What about that cute little DR9 that there are usually shares going on for a few hundred squids? Would be ideal for an Aerbabe wanting to keep her hours up I'd have thought.

You mean that single-seater Jodel? Yes, that's a very nice aircraft. Don't think it's flying at the moment... but I do have some inside information that, once it gets flying again, there may be a share for sale.....

It would mean that AerBabe would have to finish her tail-dragger checkout, too!

Which is hardly a bad thing!

Kolibear 26th January 2004 19:27

It used to take me 25 mins to drive from home to SND and its at least 20 mins from home to the Dartford Crossing which means..... Aerbabe is now an Essex Girl!!

Its a good airfield to fly from, but I doubt if you'll see an hourly rate much below £120 at any of the clubs there.

AerBabe 26th January 2004 19:28

Do you ever feel like people are talking about you behind your back? :hmm:

A single seater would be fun and finishing my TD conversion would, of course, be great (God knows it's taken me long enough). However, I don't have a few hundred quid spare. :(

Editted to say:
Mr K - I do not, have not for many years, and never intend to ... WEAR WHITE SOCKS. :}

Wide-Body 26th January 2004 19:40

Hi AerBabe

There are a couple of good deals at popham, V cheap basic ac. The best cheap share at WW is on at the moment, it's a Condor. Pretty honest taildragger (Probably the easiest TD in the world). Although I never regret trading it in for the chippy my bank manager does. If you want to see WW pop down, or PM me and I can put you in touch with the Popham shares. WW is NOT cheap, however the real fires and not to churned up runways make it a nice place to be. And the crazy Italian restaurant owner has long since gone so a really good post flight meal can be had.

Good luck

Wide :ok:
