Aerbabe

Try Headcorn - It's affordable and local to you.

The Tiger Club would probably combine operations to complete Taildragger training and be reasonably cheap............

AerBabe 26th January 2004 20:34

Wide Body - Thanks for that. Will PM you...
Arclite - I had thought about Headcorn, but keep forgetting to check my map to find out how far it is. :O

AB, Since this thread seems to be mentioning nearly all the airfields around London, perhaps you'd like to consider Wycombe Air Park (aka Booker), which I seem to remember you came to on your QXC.

There are two clubs there: Wycombe Air Centre who I fly with, and the oposition, British Airways Flying Club (who have a Chipmunk on their fleet ).

I expect that it may be a bit far away for you, but if you decide to come over and have a look drop me a PM, and if I'm free I can show you around.

Brooklands

AerBabe 27th January 2004 22:19

Like you said, I went there on my QXC and I have no particular desire to repeat the experience!! (The nasty man made me cry.)
But I might be brave and come over for another look in the cold light of day. ;)

Evo 27th January 2004 23:05

That Chippy isn't silver, is it? Some b@stard in that gave me loads of grief when I turned up at Wycombe on my QXC... :ugh: :{

Kolibear 28th January 2004 19:39

It might help us a bit to know approximately where you are starting from . 'Darn Sarf' covers everywhere south of Watford :)

Have you thought of Rochester? I know of one ppruner who would be pleased to give you the low-down about it.

And although I'm sure you'd look very fetching in white socks, its Essex boys who wear the socks, for Essex Girls, the dress-code is white stilletos! :p

AerBabe 28th January 2004 20:25

Apologies, Mr K - you're right, I should have said. I'm based about 10 miles southeast of Guildford.

Yes, that certain PPRuNer has already sent me about 3 emails on the lowdown at Rochester!!

Can I just reiterate that I don't really have a lot of money for a share - unless it's going to be available for a few months (i.e. until I find a permanent job). I'd prefer an 'as and when' I can afford it arrangement. If this means Instructor/Owners offering me cheap lessons, then that's great. :ok:

Tall_guy_in_a_152 28th January 2004 21:11

Sarfend is about 45 min drive.

I'm based about 10 miles southeast of Guildford.
That is very scary.

TG.

Brooklands 28th January 2004 21:21

AB, Sorry to hear that your experience of Wycombe's ATC wasn't a happy one: you must have got them on an off day. My experience is that they are very helpful - they were outstanding on 17th Dec given the number of people who were trying to get a flight in.

Evo, Yes the BA chippy is silver (and navy blue).

AerBabe 28th January 2004 23:35

Oh Good Grief, there really is no hope for me. I meant Shoreham. :{
Perhaps some kindly mod would take pity on me and do some editting? I--I

Some village is missing its idiot. :O

Tall_guy_in_a_152 29th January 2004 00:37

Well, you have put my mind at rest regarding your driving, but now I'm worried about your navigating!

Did you know (you should because I said it in another thread recently) that if you join Redhill Flying Club (or whatever they are called these days) you get a free membership at Shoreham (Sky Leisure) or Blackbushe. They are all part of RedAir group.

It makes life more interesting having two bases and aircraft availability is improved. Last time I compared prices they came out OK. £95 for a C-152 at Redhill, including landing fee.

TallGuy.

Kolibear 29th January 2004 04:40

Southend.....Shoreham

Shoreham...........Southend :uhoh:

Easy mistake to make - there's not that much difference between them, they both begin with 'S', both are by the sea and...err..............yup. Thats all!

I reckon it was the thought of having to wear the socks that changed your mind. ;)

Timothy 29th January 2004 05:12

10 Miles SE Guildford must mean that Redhill and Fairoaks are closest, with Shoreham, Blackbushe and Biggin as very reasonable and reachable alternatives.

With all that choice, why Sa'fen'?

Keygrip 29th January 2004 09:53

How many hours of C152 do you want to get??

You are close enough to Gatwick to take a flight to Orlando for £99 - then fly a C152 (in the sunshine) for £30 an hour.

JAA instructors available all over the place for your one hour sign off, too.

Hersham Boy 29th January 2004 17:31

AB - you truly are Queen of the Dufi (plural of Dufus). I was wondering how you planned to get to SND in 45 mins?!

Tall Guy is right about the multiple membership at Redhill - it is a little more than standard m/ship but worth it, methinks.

Hersh

AerBabe 29th January 2004 18:50

If I want to drive to Southend to fly, I will. Hmph. But I don't. So I won't. Hersh, if I wanted to get there in 45 minutes, I'd ask you to drive. :p

Useful tip on the joint membership, thanks for that.

Keygrip - I don't want lots of hours, just somewhere to go every now and then when I've got some spare cash. Is it really £99 to Orlando?! Can I stay with you?

Keef 31st January 2004 04:28

Just emerged from the woodwork (been a tad busy, shock horror). Sahfen' has a "circuits" rate, and landings are cheaper for based aircraft - not a lot cheaper, but it helps.

If you're near Guildford, then SND doesn't sound ideal. If you want to fly in a nice Arrer 3 or a nice Yak52, there are both at SND - not for hire, but pax always welcome.

Tall_guy_in_a_152 31st January 2004 06:42

You could try visiting The Flying Hut at Shoreham. I haven't actually been in myself yet, but good things have been said on PPRuNe. I will be dropping in one of these days to look at (and hopefully fly) there 172, which is only £90.50 + landing, and the Cherokee with a wobbly prop. I've decided this is my year for 'Complex' training.

They do not have a 152, but there is a PA38 Traumahawk for cheap and cheerful flying at £74.50. It must be the cheapest club rental in our neck of the woods:confused:

Maybe see you down there,

TallGuy.

p.s. prices are from their website. Cannot guarantee they are correct.

Fuji Abound 2nd February 2004 04:29

I am based at EGKA.

Send me an email if you like and I can give you my number if you want some more information.

AerBabe 2nd February 2004 15:58

Thanks for all the replies and to the mod (I--I?) who editted the title... I'll have to filter through them now before I can action any to do with SHOREHAM. :O
