Flying G-Reg Aircraft in Europe with an EASA Licence?
Can someone please explain simply the rules with regards to licencing and aircraft registration...
Can I fly a G-Reg aircraft in Ireland on an Irish EASA licence? I was told you need 2 of 3 things from the following to fly: Aircraft, Licence, Airspace. So for the above example I have an Irish licence in Irish airspace so the plane registration shouldn't matter?? Similarly if I flew a G-Reg plane in the UK on a non-UK licence that supposedly would be OK following what I said above but I know you can't do that currently. So if anyone can explain simply how to know where and what you can fly with your licence that would be great! Thanks |
Only the state with whom the aircraft is registered can authorise who can fly it, wherever the flight is to take place in the world. If you wish to fly a UK registered aeroplane using your EASA licence then you must apply to the UK CAA to do so.

General validation for EU pilotsUnder ICAO rules, a pilot wishing to operate an aircraft which has a different State of Registry to the state that issued that pilot’s licence must have a validation from the relevant authorities. This means that flight crew carrying a non-UK CAA licence, issued by an EASA Member State, who operate UK-registered aircraft must carry a ‘general validation’ with their licence. This is issued by the UK CAA. This is available here for download:This validation applies to any licence issued prior to 1 January 2021 including any rating included within that licence that remains valid until 31 December 2022. |
Does this include a 'SOLI'd' licence that was applied for before 1/2021 but completed and delivered after 1/2021?

No, the licence has to have been issued before 1 Jan 2021.

There is a separate validation for Former UK Part-FCL Licenseholders - CAP2085:
