Amanda Harrison

I have just seen from the Telegraph that Amanda Harrison is planning to fly solo to Darwin and is scheduled to depart next month. Amanda had previously expressed her plan to do this trip but 'someone else' beat her to it - I will say no more. It seems that Amanda has had some significant personal problems to deal with also. I wish her all the best and do hope she succeeds. You have to admire her gumption.

Wish her all the best with her adventure; I thought it had all gone quiet which really didn't seem to tally with her nature - pleased that the problems are behind her, as hopefully will be the UK as she heads SE across the globe towards her goal.

I think I suggested before that her adventure should begin on the Purley Way playing fields, across the A23 from the hallowed grounds of Croydon Airport (the airport site really isn't suitable any more). There is plenty of space for a Tiger...

This indeed looks like a worthy project and I would suggest Amanda might set-up up a Go Fund Me page. The spirit of her adventure seems likely to attract private aviators who might each feel able donate the cost of an hours flying.

Go Amanda!

Isn't solo2 an oxymoron?

Katamarino 15th Apr 2019 07:08

Looks like a nice trip, good luck to her!

Referring to oneself as "Captain" on ones' website is a bit cheesy though https://www.pprune.org/images/icons/laugh.gif

Let's just absolutely not go there...

Mike Flynn 17th Apr 2019 19:38

Fantastic news. I always maintained this trip in memory of Amy Johnson had to be in a Tiger Moth.

Looking at her website she has had to undertake breast cancer treatment so the last few years have been difficult.

Why stop at Darwin? Go to Sydney Amanda.

Good luck.

Just seen Amanda's Tiger circling Croydon Aerodrome before heading east towards Biggin ...Is she off? If so good luck and a safe trip!

ifitaintboeing 10th May 2019 18:01

Scheduled to depart tomorrow.

Safe flying, Amanda.

And she's off! Heading east across Kent now. Looks like one of Biggin's Spitfires may have just given her an airborne salute!

Mike Flynn 12th May 2019 06:19

Latest from the Daily Telegraph.

Ms Harrison tonight had taken a a detour and landed at Saarburcken Airport in Germany, the first stop of her 37-step journey, less than six hours after she took off today.

Go Amanda, good luck

clareprop 14th May 2019 11:25

According to her Facebook page, Amanda had a bird-strike on the spinner as she landed. One hopes the bird wasn't in a biplane...sorry....sorry..sorry. :O

Good luck to Amanda - and blue skies.

Mike Flynn 14th May 2019 17:51

She seems to be playing this very low key and matter of fact.

Planemike 14th May 2019 18:05

Must be using a different firm of public relations consultants to the other bird who did some flying in a bi-plane. Shucks.....can't remember her name, will have to "Google" it....!!!

treadigraph 14th May 2019 19:42

Blog here - spinner seems so have departed the hub with no further damage, might decrease airspeed by half a knot or so!

And not to forget the effect on the engine cooling airflow - it may well be a required item !

Auxtank 18th May 2019 20:44

Yes indeed. The very best of luck to her.

She's an Aviator first and foremost. And that's what counts.

Wonder what she's done about the (missing) spinner? She'll lose a few knots in the cruise. Replacements aren't too hard to find.

Fair winds and blue skies all the way Amanda!

Mike Flynn 19th May 2019 06:25

Can someone loan her a spinner?

treadigraph 24th May 2019 06:39

She had a partial EFATO at Rhodes yesterday but got the old girl safely back on the ground in once piece save for the recalcitrant donk.

Lind1795 24th May 2019 06:44

Fingers crossed the aircraft is repaired speedily and Amanda is soon on her way again. Best wishes to her for a safe onward journey.

VictorGolf 24th May 2019 16:49

Talk at Duxford today was that engineering help is on the way to her.

Mike Flynn 29th May 2019 19:51

She has arrived in Lebanon.

Solo2Darwin - Amanda safely into Beirut, Lebanon

Checking in on behalf of Give-Get=Go with some good news. Amanda Harrison continued her great progress and arrived in Beirut today to a suitably great reception.

Mohamad Tabsh was there representing the brilliant sponsors MEA with his team alongside MEA pilot Houda Matar.

We are incredibly grateful to also have Amal Elias leading Representatives of The Minister for Economic Empowerment of Women and Youth with Violette Khairallah Safadi.

Find out more about the work they are doing via their media channels:

She had a partial EFATO
where “partial” equals 25% of the cylinders!

Wow, I hope the other cylinders were in better shape than that one on departure UK!

Mike Flynn 30th May 2019 17:01

Blown head gasket?

What would have caused it?

papa_sierra 30th May 2019 20:48

Solid copper or composite gasket ? I would have thought every one would be using the solid now.

More problems for Amanda.

PRESS & MEDIA RELEASE
London, June 1st. 12.00 noon.
**(Heart) Breaking News** Solo2Darwin
It was today announced that the Solo2Darwin Challenge of Amanda Harrison has been forced to pause in Beirut on the journey from the U.K. to Darwin, Australia.
“I am gutted, and it has taken a day for me to stop crying.” said Amanda, “But I have to face up to reality. I can’t go forward right now, so I have to be patient and go again as soon as the geo-politics are sorted out. I shall be back!”
Notices to Airman (NOTAMs) issued from the Pakistan, Indian and Oman air traffic control effectively closes airspace to east bound flights from Oman to Pakistan and India (below 24,000ft) which is way above Amanda’s maximum flying height.
An additional and presently insuperable problem is the border between India and Pakistan is closed. This will not open until at least 14th June but there is no firm end in sight to the closure of this airspace.
When Solo2Darwin was planned, none of these restrictions were in place. The specific India/Pakistan border issue occurred in February this year but the airspace was reopened for a short period afterwards. Solo2Darwin moved forward but the planned end to those restrictions did not take place. “It’s like hitting a brick wall of restrictions we can’t go around.” Said Mike Wigg, Chief of Technical Support for Solo2Darwin.
“These Airspace restrictions as well as the growing tension and military activity in the Persian Gulf mean that Solo2Darwin cannot continue safely for the moment.”
Planning and Technical Support was always aware that certain parts of the world would be challenging but the escalation of problems in this region has been worse than anticipated and government restrictions cannot be ignored.
Amanda added “So many people offered and have given their support in many ways and we will work to comp @ Beirut, Lebanon

Katamarino 1st Jun 2019 14:31

Much simpler and easier when it was all just British!

Mike Flynn 1st Jun 2019 19:41

These problems can still be overcome with the right connections and a bit of diplomacy.

sycamore 1st Jun 2019 20:53

Stick it on top of a freighter,or passing aircraft carrier...!

Amanda Harrison latest

Following a nudge from Terry Holloway at the Cambridge Flying Club I am posting the latest on Amanda Harrison.

She has been forced to to turn back and return to England until the political situation with Iran and the Straits of Hormuz plus Pakistan and India relations cool down.

1987 Eve Jackson Biggin Hill to OZ

Eve Jackson built and flew one of David Cook's CFM Shadow Microlight powered by a two cylinder two stroke Rotax 447 engine.
An epic journey and Eve is in the Amy Johnson mould. She was awarded the Royal Aeronautical Society Gold Medal for her 12,500 miles of solo endeavour.
No sat nav just compass, map and stopwatch.

harrryw 29th Jun 2019 09:52

It was a great try and I am sure if sanity ever comes to the world you will be back and straight through to Darwin.

BEagle 29th Jun 2019 13:11

Amanda is currently being assisted by AOPA (Hellas) members to load her Tiger into a shipping container for the journey back to the UK. Knowing Amanda, this little setback won't stop her having another go in the Autumn weather window!

Years ago it might have been possible to persuade on of HM's passing transport aircraft to drop into Rodos, load up and fly home. But these days it's probably not even worth posing the question....:(
