Sky Demon
Has anyone used Sky Demon on a Samsung Tablet and how well/badly does it perform.
I am about to buy a Samsung Tab and would like to avoid an iPad. |
Works fine on my Tab S.

Buy a map Wayne and look out the window.:ok:

Buy Skydemon, Wayne - and look out the window. ;)
Works fine on a Samsung Tab. |
Thanks max Alt and boss eyes. I intend looking out of the window but want to try and not get lost. Sky Demon is better than my map reading. Off I go to buy a new Tablet!
|
I've got a Galaxy Tab 4, it's old and slow, but if you ONLY want to use it for SkyDemon, it works fine and is quite cheap.

Wayne, navigate your way to stow maries and I will buy you a cup of tea.
M25,A127 then left before southend. Cheers. Joe |
ive got the half mill map (£24) on my ipad (with phone sim card), pseudo gps using mobile phone masts, gives a moving position and track line, only minor niggle is the annoying noise you get from locking onto different phone masts, just like on the 757 when you forgot to turn your phone off!

M25,A127 then left before southend. I would certainly agree with keeping nav skills sharp, but some are not good at it and others would rather not have the hassle of planning on a chart, battling through all the notams that tell you about problems in remote areas of the world and then going elsewhere for the weather. It really is horses for courses and if you want to stick to a paper chart that is fine, but don't be so anti others not wanting to do so! |
SkyDemon + Galaxy Tab works well for me. If you like the reassurance of a paper chart, it's easy to print your SkyDemon route.

Hi Wayne,
I have SD on a Tesco Hudl II mounted on the column along with the same on a Sony Xperia as a back up. With the Air Pilot and Pooley's charts added along with all manuals on .pdf it's even better than having e-flight deck to hand! I certainly wouldn't get airborne without it these days. Any tablet should be fine to run SD but don't bother getting one with a sim card in it as you can't get much of a signal in flight and hot spotting your phone on the ground works just as well for those times when you have 4G but no WiFi. Happy flying. |

Or do what you were planning and have more time to look out of the window AND know where you are. If you are wondering where you are, its the 21st century BTW despite some people insisting on living in the past. |
Nexus 7 has the advantage of having various bespoke kneeboards already made for it. Don't get suckered into a non-cellular iPad - no built in GPS!
And on the topic of tech, i am sure those Luddites amongst you are the same ones sat with a paper map in a car. Oh you have satnav? Funny that... |
Airspace Avoid is free and updated every 28 days. Moving map. Works well on my Nexus7, Sony Experia, and old Chinese cheapo phone. Sponsored by the CAA. Gets and shows NOTAMs. Can display your position in an ATC friendly form.

have a look at Runway HD, half the price of Sky Demon, i think instructors get a discount if you call them.

I run Garmin Pilot on my Samsung - works very well, so more a comment about the internal GPS.

I was on a long cross country recently and realized I had my iPhone with SD running, my IPad mounted up on the sun visor running Garmin Pilot bluetoothed to the Garmin GDL 39 3D, a panel mounted Garmin 660 also toothed to the GDL , a GNS 430 running the HSI, a Garmin SL30 NavCom back up CDI, and my Yaesu 750 handheld . So that's 6 GPS and 3 VOR NAV receivers, 3 com radios, paper sectional and terminal charts and receiving flight following from ATC.
I thought to myself: "WTF! This is absolutely ridiculous, If I get lost on this perfect VFR day I'm a complete and utter asshole" And to think those RAF guys done the night bombing raids over the Reich using celestial navigation. |
I'm in no way connected to the company but, in my humble opinion, Skydemon is a fantastic bit of kit and worth every penny.
I think some people would prefer us to all live in mud huts rather than progress with technology! But from personal experience, I'd always have a route planned on a chart, just in case the device your running it on packs up! I've run SD on both Samsung and Apple devices. It seems to run a bit smoother on Apple but wasn't bad on Samsung either. |
Have to agree, Skydemon is fantastic. Used on LG tablet and iPad. Agree with previous poster in that it seems less buggy/slow on the apple os than android.
