Sky Demon

Has anyone used Sky Demon on a Samsung Tablet and how well/badly does it perform.
I am about to buy a Samsung Tab and would like to avoid an iPad.

flyingorthopod 21st Apr 2017 17:07

Works fine on my Tab S.

max alt 21st Apr 2017 18:47

Buy a map Wayne and look out the window.:ok:

BossEyed 21st Apr 2017 19:52

Buy Skydemon, Wayne - and look out the window. ;)

Works fine on a Samsung Tab.

w.bayley 22nd Apr 2017 04:55

Thanks max Alt and boss eyes. I intend looking out of the window but want to try and not get lost. Sky Demon is better than my map reading. Off I go to buy a new Tablet!

tobster911 22nd Apr 2017 08:59

I've got a Galaxy Tab 4, it's old and slow, but if you ONLY want to use it for SkyDemon, it works fine and is quite cheap.

max alt 22nd Apr 2017 12:03

Wayne, navigate your way to stow maries and I will buy you a cup of tea.
M25,A127 then left before southend.
Cheers.

ive got the half mill map (£24) on my ipad (with phone sim card), pseudo gps using mobile phone masts, gives a moving position and track line, only minor niggle is the annoying noise you get from locking onto different phone masts, just like on the 757 when you forgot to turn your phone off!

Fine if he only wants to go to Stow Maries, are you going to give directions for all the other airfields in the country?
I would certainly agree with keeping nav skills sharp, but some are not good at it and others would rather not have the hassle of planning on a chart, battling through all the notams that tell you about problems in remote areas of the world and then going elsewhere for the weather. It really is horses for courses and if you want to stick to a paper chart that is fine, but don't be so anti others not wanting to do so!

Discorde 27th Apr 2017 13:12

SkyDemon + Galaxy Tab works well for me. If you like the reassurance of a paper chart, it's easy to print your SkyDemon route.

BoeingBoy 27th Apr 2017 16:17

Hi Wayne,

I have SD on a Tesco Hudl II mounted on the column along with the same on a Sony Xperia as a back up. With the Air Pilot and Pooley's charts added along with all manuals on .pdf it's even better than having e-flight deck to hand! I certainly wouldn't get airborne without it these days.

Any tablet should be fine to run SD but don't bother getting one with a sim card in it as you can't get much of a signal in flight and hot spotting your phone on the ground works just as well for those times when you have 4G but no WiFi.

Happy flying.

:ugh::ugh:

Or do what you were planning and have more time to look out of the window AND know where you are.

If you are wondering where you are, its the 21st century BTW despite some people insisting on living in the past.

Nexus 7 has the advantage of having various bespoke kneeboards already made for it. Don't get suckered into a non-cellular iPad - no built in GPS!

And on the topic of tech, i am sure those Luddites amongst you are the same ones sat with a paper map in a car. Oh you have satnav? Funny that...

Maoraigh1 27th Apr 2017 19:35

Airspace Avoid is free and updated every 28 days. Moving map. Works well on my Nexus7, Sony Experia, and old Chinese cheapo phone. Sponsored by the CAA. Gets and shows NOTAMs. Can display your position in an ATC friendly form.

have a look at Runway HD, half the price of Sky Demon, i think instructors get a discount if you call them.

foxmoth 27th Apr 2017 21:52

True, but I would also recomend having pilot aware as well, if you have that you can use the GPS from that for your non-cellular ipad!

Ebbie 2003 27th Apr 2017 22:34

I run Garmin Pilot on my Samsung - works very well, so more a comment about the internal GPS.

piperboy84 28th Apr 2017 01:01

I was on a long cross country recently and realized I had my iPhone with SD running, my IPad mounted up on the sun visor running Garmin Pilot bluetoothed to the Garmin GDL 39 3D, a panel mounted Garmin 660 also toothed to the GDL , a GNS 430 running the HSI, a Garmin SL30 NavCom back up CDI, and my Yaesu 750 handheld . So that's 6 GPS and 3 VOR NAV receivers, 3 com radios, paper sectional and terminal charts and receiving flight following from ATC.

I thought to myself:

"WTF! This is absolutely ridiculous, If I get lost on this perfect VFR day I'm a complete and utter asshole"

And to think those RAF guys done the night bombing raids over the Reich using celestial navigation.

I'm in no way connected to the company but, in my humble opinion, Skydemon is a fantastic bit of kit and worth every penny.

I think some people would prefer us to all live in mud huts rather than progress with technology!

But from personal experience, I'd always have a route planned on a chart, just in case the device your running it on packs up! I've run SD on both Samsung and Apple devices. It seems to run a bit smoother on Apple but wasn't bad on Samsung either.

FerrisBueller 30th Apr 2017 12:24

Have to agree, Skydemon is fantastic. Used on LG tablet and iPad. Agree with previous poster in that it seems less buggy/slow on the apple os than android.

xrayalpha 30th Apr 2017 16:01

Piperboy,

But they might have actually hit something worthwhile with an ipad!

I don't know, they found Dresden just fine without having any Location Services turned on.

MaxAlt- are you an airline pilot by any chance?. If you are I bet you don't use a map and look out of the window of a 737/A320 et al.

memories of px 2nd May 2017 07:11

i think youll find that WB and JG are very old friends, its just banter.

memories of px 24th Aug 2017 08:51

Now we've got the route sorted, anybody know of the best r-nav data base to put into the i-pad, and costs?

Looking for a little advice on iPad and Skydemon use in the UK

I've been flying the last few years in the US using a wifi only iPad with Foreflight and picking up my GPS via a Stratus

I'm now back in the UK what options are open to me with my wifi only iPad for my EFB ..if any ?

Or is it time to ditch my wifi only iPad and update to a sim card /GPS model ?

BossEyed 24th Aug 2017 09:33

SkyDemon will work fine with a WiFi only iPad and external GPS, as you used in the US.

Thank you :ok:
That's going to save me some money then.

140KIAS 24th Aug 2017 14:27

I bought a 7" Galaxy Tab A specifically for SD. Main reasons for choosing this were built in 4G and GPS. I put a Three 12month / 12G PAYG SIM in it.

The only thing I have noticed is that SD occasionally craps out. However I think this is down to me leaving the 4G connected and losing signal.

Discorde 24th Aug 2017 17:35

Problems can arise when installing OS updates for iPads - preventing linking to an external GPS. That's why I switched to the Galaxy Tab, which solved the problem.

BossEyed 24th Aug 2017 20:33

It is true; that has happened.

Once.

Some years ago now. It thoroughly embarrassed Apple who fixed it tout suite.

I am not particularly an Apple fan, but the potential for such cock-ups are not limited to any single manufacturer.

Nick T 25th Aug 2017 06:01

It happened last year with the iOS10 release.

iPad Pro 9.7", Garmin Glo, SkyDemon... the GPS dropped out all over the shop. Was eventually fixed in 10.2 (I think).

Was a lovely introduction for me to iPad navigation having just passed my skills test using map & stopwatch

Anyway, now it works beautifully with the iPad (wifi only) and PilotAware in the Shareoplane.

But I'll not be upgrading my iPad to iOS11 until a few weeks after release and I don't see any issues reported from others :)
