Silly names
 

Inspired by Gertrude the Wombat, and the weather outside, I wonder how did all you intrepid pilots, armchair and other types, decide what to call yourselves on these forae? When I first tiptoed into PPRuNe (after the Hudson River touchdown) I had intended to be known as Soupdragon. But got muddled up and put my real name in by mistake, so it wasn't arrogance or a desire for fame, but age linked to unfamiliarity with computering.

I notice that the Oban thread has been resurrected again, which may have something to do with the condition of the roads in Scotland. So if you are inclined to come in from the cold and spend a few moments at the keyboard, do tell, how did you choose your name?

When I was still in university, I went backpacking a lot, so I started using that nickname on IRC and such. (For the computer illiterates: IRC was the predecessor of ICQ, MSN and other forms of instant messaging.) I still backpack every now and then (can be found between Christmas and New Years on the Hadrian's Wall Trail) but not as often as I used to.

I originally started using "Hazel", the head rabbit in the book Watership Down, until I realized that that was a girls name in the real world.:O

My name is Donald. Pato is Spanish for duck. I grew up in Argentina, where the only Donald they knew was a duck. The nickname was inevitable, and it stuck. :)

IO540 is my Lyco engine, of course... 250HP (in this case) flat six.

Pace firstly has my first name initial followed by the corny ace bit : ) Pace also indicates speed / movement. Very dull compared to many I have seen here and in other forums.

Im known as morrisman1 on several forums. Its partly because my last name is morison and I collect and restore morris minors, the 1 is becuase morrisman was taken :{

In my early 20s I was an engineer working with a bunch of scientists whose mentality was so different to mine we could have been from different planets - they were all about the information, I was all about the results.

So, I put up a notice on my desk

"Dear Scientists

Please remember.

Genghis the Engineer".


It seemed a good name at the time, and subsequently I started using it on bulletin boards. Since then I've read a few biographies of t'other Genghis (previously known as Temijin son of Yesugei) and find him a really quite fascinating chap - anybody who can go from naked and weaponless on the Mongol Steppes at age 7 to ruling about a third of the known world by 37 had something going for him, although my own career path has been a bit slower !

I chose the words I hope to utter when the aeroplane I helped to build takes to the sky for the first time.

I thought about adding an exclamation mark to the name but that would have looked silly... :)

Star Trek fan, I use Worf & Spock on other forums & when i tried them here they were already taken so ended up with 7of9, she was the half Borg half human in Startrek Voyager.................:rolleyes::E

Joining the forum in 2009 meant I found the names I first thought of already taken. I came up with the name of the fenland flyer as I spend much of my flying time bimbling around the fens, although I'm getting more adventurous now I’ve had my license for a few months.

I do find the fens very interesting to fly around as I’ve lived in the area all my life, and never before appreciated the scale of the engineering used to drain the land here. The first time I saw the Welney washes they were full and it gave me a surprise to see just what a large body of water it was, previously I only though of it in terms of if the road across to Ely would be flooded or not. It made me realise just how limited a ground based view of the world is.

I really wanted to call myself "adverse yaw" cos I often go in the opposite direction when controlled. Unfortunately it was taken but I have never seen it used.

In the 90's I developed a new technique for electroplating using reverse pulsed current and became known as The Father of Pulse in the industry. Hence the name pulse1.

I'm a flyer who lives in Fleet.

I wish my name had a more exciting etymology.

HighFlyer was taken so added 75 on the end as I was born in that year. The rest is starting to seem pretty ironic these days because being a high flyer is quite difficult with the Swedish winter. Still, LowPublicTransportTaker75 doesn't sound very good I guess.

Well... What a difficult question! I'm not French, and never have been French. I don't even speak French. I'm in fact British, and living in Asia.

Oh well, L'aviateur just seemed like a good name.

Childhood nickname from my Brother. Progressed from 'Little Bean' to 'Bean' during teanage years and now 'beany' in adult life. :8

"Smithy" - general nickname that most folks know me by. Stuck the Capt part in front of it because I'm a pilot. Nothing special. Most folk know who I am though so not a very anonymous name - big deal. :hmm:

Mine needs no explanation of course :) It's really not very original and I wasn't feeling very inspired at the time - I joined whilst at work so had to do it all in a hurry before I got caught!

Well, still some left.

The name of a castle used by Richard the Lionheart in Cyprus which I admired when I lived there as a child. The castle itself is a great example of simple engineering, being (literally) built like a brick outhouse, but on the site is also the remains of one of the earliest sugar refineries.

Simple engineering when that was all that was required but some elements of high tech too - a bit like a training aircraft! :ok:

I was given the nickname Morris by my maths teacher when I was about 12 after doing an impression of Dom Jolly's morris dance from Trigger Happy TV. I cannot recall why 542 exactly. I've used this name for about 8 years now but can't for the life of me recall when or why I first used it.

If you should buy me a drink be warned.........

I don't generally use my own name as an ID, as it's far too common to be available on most sites.

The words are descriptive, i.e. red-haired and female. The numbers were needed as redbird on its own had already been taken. Doesn't take a genius to work out what the numbers signify, regretting it now! :{

Predictably, the short form of my aircraft reg. The Wanderer bit is either a tendency to appear at fly-ins, or an inability to follow headings or course lines...

After reading a number of posts, while researching a helicopter issue, I found an answer I had would be potentially helpful on this forum. I had to think of a name to sign in. As I (perhaps mistakenly) believed that I was supposed to remain anonymous, I did not think that using my real name would be permitted. So, I got thinking.....

Few people would argue about my being a pilot, so that part was easy. I'm also a Transport Canada Design Approval Representative (DAR). Anonymous name found! Not very imaginative, but simple, and appropriate.

Redbird if the 72 bit indicates your age? No I will not swap with you! If its the YOB then yes please ;)

There are nine players in a baseball team, and you put the best batters up first to bat. For some reason I was always put last up to bat (probably 'cos I was rubbish), hence the name. When age forced my move to softball with 10 players in a team, I couldn't be bothered to change it.

1972 is very young :)

I remember walking down the street and this was playing out of an open window, c. 1968.
