Reds Notam - Am I losing it?
The Notam for the Red Arrows this weekend does not appear to be well worded. Am I the only one who reads this as one prohibited area lasting for 24 hours and 38 minutes?
Yes, I know the MAUVE 276 gives full details, but surely it cannot be so hard to write a simple intelligently written Notam. Or am I losing it? Has to be a misprint....:ok:

Don't carry enough fuel for all that. :oh:
Looks like the same time on both days, but it is ambiguous. I never assume anything so if it possibly affected my flying I would ring the freephone or Sandown to confirm. |

Funny, I was just having the same head-scratching moment. The circular tour of AIP and Notams yielded nothing different, but the freephone info. for Saturday makes it a bit clearer.

The clue is in the last line of the NOTAM which reads "SCHEDULE: 0955-1033". Therefore the restriction only applies between these times on both days.

CFI, Thanks.
Yet another example of a technically correct Notam being unintelligible to the humble flier. Acceptable perhaps in the days of the telex and tele-printer but unnecessary in the modern age. How hard would it be simply to put a line in saying “scheduled time each day….” |

Don't get me started. It will never end. See my post here On any given day I could find you (literally) hundreds of marginally relevant, wrongly coded or just plain useless Notams. Until AIS get it into their heads that THEY need to do a bit of QC (as they obviously can't rely on the originators to do it - including the Reds) the whole system will be clogged with junk that obscures the important stuff. I will e-mail AUS but if I did so every time I found rubbish in the system I would never have time to go flying. |
I complained to AUS about NOTAMs whose effective points started with the first incident on the first day, and continued until the completion of the last event on the last day. This has the effect of NOTAMs showing up in some cases for many days on which they don’t take effect. AUS replied that they do not have resources to raise NOTAMs for individual days.
Instead, as users, it appears that we have to find the resources to filter out NOTAMs that don’t apply to the dates or times that we are flying, because AUS can’t be bothered to do it right. If they are really so under-resourced, it ought to be fixed. Actually, I don’t believe them. I believe they simply will not change their working practices because they can’t be bothered. Chris N. |
