School recommendation London Area

A colleague wants to start learning. He lives in Tufnell Park, London NW5 and is looking for a recommendation for a school.

I guess Elstree and Stapleford are most convenient, but Biggin, Denham, WW, Booker and Fairoaks would all be possible (he doesn't drive, so we are talking trains and taxis).

I am familiar with the situation at Fairoaks, but if anyone feels strongly enough about the schools or clubs where they learn/have learnt to PM me with recommendations or warnings it would be very kind.

Why do it if it's not fun?

One of those threads where everyone will say how great the school was where they trained, but no one has any experience of any others to compare it to, I guess.

I'll start!

White Waltham - fantastic flying club, great instructors. PA28s are mostly tidy. Only drawback is that they're not cheap - in my opinion this is more than offset by the genuine club environment, which I still haven't found anywhere else I've been, but your friend's priorities may be different to mine, you haven't given us very much information to go on.

I did my PPL at WW and would second FFF's comments.

As some compensation for not being the cheapest, they did field sufficiently large a fleet that I never missed a lesson for want of a serviceable plane.

I am having dinner with a WW owner pilot, who knows the club well, in a few days, so I will sound him out.

So far (on and off forum) I have had thumbs up for Stapleford and WW and down for Panshanger...anyone want to make any observations about Elstree or any of the Biggin Hill schools, either privately or publicly?
