Cherokee with Rough Running Engine?

Hope this is the correct forum for this one.
I was out teaching a group Rock Climbing today in the Grizedale Valley near Patterdale and Glenridding in the Lake District. At about 10.00ish?? what looked like a Piper Cherokee turned over Helvellyn Summit and seemed to realy ovr rev the engine. Then it proceeded to lose a lot of height rapidly into the Ullswater Valley with the engine backfiring a lot. Then it turned over the Ullswater lake towards Pooley Bridge and out of sight. Acollegue of mine Canoeing on the Lake reported a light Aircraft around the same time flying very low over the lake towards Penrith. This is highly unusual as there is usually a lot of Military activity down the lake between 200 and 500 feet.
Anyone know anything about it? Nearest Airfield is Carlisle and there are a lot of big mountains out here.
Hope all involved are okay.

If it was today then there would have been no mil traffic buzzin' around at low level. I am sure it would have been on the news by now, so hopefully all is well.
