Flying Grants
Is there such a place where you can get a grant to do a PPL ... as i was at my flying school today and i over heard 2 students talking about flying grants.... do these excist???????? please tell me no after i had to get a loan from my bank....

There is the RAF flying Scholarship where they pay for 20 hours of PPL training.
The University Air Squadron
- However this is not training directly to your PPL its is aimed at putting potential RAF officers through elementary basic flight training while they are at university.

Jonathang Unfortunately, the Flying Scholarship as we know it went into terminal demise around 2 years ago.
The Inland Revenue, in their wisdom, decided that the system for claiming flying training as vocational training for tax rebates was being abused and put a stop to that around 5 years ago, except for those that can prove that they are going for an ATPL.
The Air League are a very good organisation [BRL - they're a not for profit org, so I should get away with this link!!] and with the kind support of industrial sponsorship, are able to award a number of scholarships, bursaries and awards. My niece actually got an award from them + the Guild of Women Pilots and got her PPL hours paid for (well, up to the 45 hr mark, anyway) - pretty good at the age of 18 to get a PPL for nothing. The only other way I can think of (other than a possible BA cadetship) is Atlantic Flight Training, who for an investment on your part of around £18k will train you to frozen ATPL and guarantee a job at the end of it. I'm not so sure this scheme is still running (I was talking to someone last week who has got an ATPL through them and is still awaiting an interview).

The Guild of Air Pilots and Air Navigators (GAPAN) annually award PPL, Flying Instructor and ATPL scholarships.
They normally start the selection process in the Spring, with the flying completed over the summer.
I was fortunate enough to receive a scholarship myself, and am very grateful for the fantastic opportunity they gave me.

I seem to remember reading somewhere there is a BSc in 'pilot studies' at Leed Uni, they subsidise a PPL in the second year (I think). it's done in conjunction with a local flying school.
Don't know to what level they subsidise the PPL, and how useful the 'Pilot studies' degree is in relation to the commercial exams. If that was your ultimate plan then this may be a way to get some subsidy for flying.
