Airfield Directory: Non-commercial/open community airfield notes, fees, … database

I’ve been building a free, open, non-commercial database for GA airfields called "Airfield Directory" (airfield.directory) - pilot-written “airport notes” ("PIREPs" - think airport reviews / local ops tips), plus fees like landing fees and fuel prices. Think of it as Wikipedia for Airports.

We have so far about 750 pilot reports in our database.

Why: Especially outside the US, mainly in Europe, basic ops info + PPR links + landing fees + fuel prices are often scattered across forums, PDFs, apps, and paywalls. I wanted something (1) easy to contribute to and (2) openly reusable so it can be accessed and integrated easily instead of living in yet another silo. Plus with a license which gurantees that the data can live on forever.

What it does:
  • Community reports: read and write GA airfield reports that are published under Creative Commons BY-SA 4.0. No tracking, no ads, no commercial interest - ever.
  • Landing fees & fuel prices: includes fuel/fees, plus personalized landing fee estimates via Aerops when you set your tailsign in your profile (where supported).
  • Interactive map + filters: browse airfields on a map and filter by runway length, surface type, IFR capability, fuel availability, etc. Works also well on mobile (fullscreen).
  • Auto-translation: PIREPs are automatically translated into 6 languages (de en, es, fr, it, and nl); you can pick your preferred language in your profile or use language subdomains for a localized site experience.
  • Webcams: See real-time conditions at airports with integrated webcams from Autorouter and Windy. Get a visual glimpse before your flight with live and timelapse views.
  • Telegram bot: quick airfield lookup and PIREP submission from AirfieldDirectoryBot on Telegram (including fuel/fees where available).
  • Easy sign-in: passwordless login with Google, Apple, or Amazon.
  • AI summaries: for many airfields without community reports yet, it shows clearly labeled AI-generated summaries as a starting point.
  • Open data API: JSON endpoints for airfield data plus bulk downloads of complete PIREP datasets (S3) for developers/apps.
  • Live aviation weather (decoded METAR/TAF) including a hazard and runway advisor
  • MCP Server for direct integration with Claude / ChatGPT
  • ForeFlight Content Packs
  • Rental Car availability via app2drive
  • POI search and leg planning on the map
  • Data foundation: baseline airfield data comes from the OpenAIP community dataset, enriched with PIREPs/pricing and additional info.
I’d appreciate if you all would add a short report for your home field or a recent destination.

A note to readers,

This post is on the edge of the rules against advertising or promoting other websites on PPRuNe. I have approved it because it has been presented as a free service with a benefit to recreational pilots. Please remember that PPRuNe does not permit unpaid advertising, and does not promote specific aviation products, services or websites. As a moderator, I am viewing this as a "pilot community" effort, but not a "promoted" service, nor in any way accredited for accuracy...

While I can be reasonably sure I won't be interacting with this myself (mostly due outside the intended area) I can appreciate how useful it could be to others, and certainly how much effort will have gone into producing it.

Hence logging in here just to say 'well done' and that I hope you get good support over time - this sort of thing can eat up a lot of time in maintenance!

Thank you very much for your kind words. I appreciate it. Quick question, what is your intended area?

Airfield Directory now supports RSS feeds and embedded airfield widgets

Dear Community,

#1: The latest pilot reports are now available as an RSS feed by adding /rss, you can also subscribe to PIREPs for individual airfields, e.g. /rss/EDAZ...

#2: For a different perspective, here's a feature not directly aimed at pilots, but more at airfield operators, app developers, etc.: You can now easily embed information from Airfield Directory about an airfield into your own website. For example, you can quickly display your 5-star rating as a badge - or the latest weather reports from aviationweather.gov with a nice UX.

At /embed (link at bottom of the page) you'll now find a configurator where you can select the desired information for an airfield to be embedded, either just the basic rating information, or also weather, Aerops landing fees/fuel/forms, or App2Drive availability. This can then be configured horizontally/vertically and compactly or extensively, resulting in just a few lines of HTML code that can be inserted anywhere as a snippet. Integration into a website thus takes less than 30 seconds.

The data itself is delivered and cached via a global CDN to ensure efficient performance.

So, if any website owners are reading this, I'd be delighted if you used this feature.

TL;DR: You can now organize your airports into lists, share them publicly, upload your ForeFlight/SkyDemon logbooks, and export everything to KML.

Dear Community,

This time, an Easter gift for all pilots with a much-requested feature: Lists and Favorites.

When you're logged in, a new menu item, "Lists," will appear under your profile picture.

On each airport page, there are now buttons (Favorites and Lists) to add that airport to your lists. You can also create a list and add airports to it using ICAO autocomplete.

You always have a built-in list called Favorites. Additionally, you can create an unlimited number of other lists ("My Favorite Airports in Italy"). You can then share these publicly if you wish (your Favorites always remain private). This also creates an overview list of your public lists.

To save you from starting completely from scratch, I've included a feature where you can upload your ForeFlight or SkyDemon logbooks (if you use them for flight logging) as a CSV file, and a list will be created for you. You can also use this to add to existing lists, for example, if you want to maintain an "Airports I've Visited" list.

Conveniently, you can also click on "No review written" to see which airports on a list you haven't yet reviewed – a little incentive to add those reports. :-)

Last but not least, you can also download lists as KML files. This is ideal, for example, for importing them into a layer in Google My Maps.

I hope you have fun with them and that you'll share many of the lists!

Dear Community,

I have received numerous reports in the last months regarding the inconsistent data quality of US airport data in Airfield Directory, caused by incorrect data in OpenAIP. I am sorry for the inconvenience caused.

I am very happy to announce that since yesterday the site relies for US airfield data solely on the official data by the FAA, updated daily. Also, we did include all non ICAO airfields. Thanks to that, incorrect US airfield data should be a thing of the past.

In the near future we are planning to extend the data by parsing the PDF supplements to show more useful data like fuel availability etc. - ideas and feedback are welcome.

I hope you find this as a motivation to write a report for your home field!

tl;dr: a) airfield.directory now displays official customs and entry information for UK, Swiss, and German airfields, as well as US airfields with CBP information. b) The map now features new filters for Customs, Immigration, and Special Ports of Entry.

Dear Community,

First of all, thank you – almost 800 PIREPs from you – we're approaching the 1000 mark, the growth is unbroken. Thanks for participating!

Since the last update post, new features have been added that are particularly important for border flights:

1. Customs & Immigration (US , DE, CH, UK)

We now display directly on the airport page whether customs and immigration are possible — and link to the official government source in each case:
  • USA: CBP (Airports of Entry) plus 19 CFR § 122.24 for special regulations on the southern border + fact sheet links.
  • Germany: Customs, including the complete list of customs airports and Section 22a "special landing sites," with a deep link to the entry.
  • Switzerland: BAZG entry per airport.
  • UK: UK Border Force via GAR Annex A list.
  • Greece: The international ports of entry (international airports according to AD 1.3) are specially marked.

Opening hours, telephone numbers, and email addresses of the authorities are included where available. Also direct emails and phone numbers of the according CBP authorities.

The data is updated monthly from the official linked sources.

c) New Map Filters
The map now features three new filters:
  • Customs — only airports with customs clearance
  • Immigration — only airports with immigration clearance
  • Special Ports of Entry — e.g., for US Southern Border Operations according to 19 CFR § 122.24 or visits to Greece.

One click, and you'll only see the airports relevant to your cross-border trip.

Enjoy the new features – feedback is always welcome.
