In my experience the most often overlooked takeoff check is the static RPM check. Static RPM is noted in the POH and should be checked with the airplane stopped at the runup point or at the button of the runway. It will be substantially lower than redline RPM and is the only way to ensure the engine is developing full power.
When I was an instructor I was asked to fly the 150 with another instructor’s student as he was not feeling well. The engine didn’t seem quite right on the runup and sure enough it was over 100 revs below the minimum static RPM limit. We went back to the ramp and I snagged the airplane. It turned out the mags were badly miss timed. A few days later the dispatcher saiid you know the other instructors were complaining about the airplane being doggy for the last month but you were the first guy to actually snag it
