Initially is the process still a matter of paying a fee with correct form filled out, presenting original logbooks/licenses at Gatwick House, then waiting for assessment regarding possible exam exemptions based on level of experience (license, flying experience, ratings held)?

If so, how long are logbooks held at Gatwick House before ultimately handed back to pilot?

If posting, best advice is to send a certified copy or electronic logbook printout, not your original. Whilst it is thankfully rare, logbooks have gone missing, and that would be disastrous for almost anybody.

Turnaround times vary a lot, but recent rumour mill says around three weeks.

You can get allegedly definitive answers on regulatory questions by emailing fclweb (at) caa (dot) co (dot) uk. Turnaround on questions is usually a few weeks, but responses can be a bit variable. It is best to dig through the regulations state what you consider the position to be, with references, and ask CAA to confirm or deny that.

The counter service at Aviation House (next to Gatwick Airport) has re-started post-Covid, advice here: https://www.caa.co.uk/General-aviati...unter-service/
