confused!! help!

hi everyone,

can anyone offer some advice please with what the situation is now with the JAR system?
i have been trying to investigate gaining a PPL (h) abroad and then returning to the UK with a view to continue flying here.
does anyone know where i can find out what the boottom line is with regards what is involved in the conversion and the costs involved. I found one web site that even claims that the JAR organisation is deliberatly making things tough for people to train abroad so that they are more inclined to spend the money in europe, could this be the case?!
although i want to try and save some money my desire to train abroad is also driven by my intrest in travelling to new places and to try and make the most of the experience.
If anyone can help explain where things stand at the moment and what will be happening in the future or point me in the right direction it would be much appreciated.

cheers

p.s ive emailed the CAA but no reply yet

A lot of questions, many of which are answered in recent threads on PPRuNe - search on something like training, have a scan through the Wannabes forum and you should get most of your answers there.

Bottom line is, there are numerous flying training organisations (particularly in Florida, but also in Europe / Africa) offering flying training to a full JAR PPL syllabus, generally offering a cost saving on UK training. On completion of one of these courses and with a UK Medical, you'll get a CAA licence. You would then be well advised to budget for some training in the UK to get used to UK flight procedures, RT terminology, weather patterns, etc. This may tend to balance the cost equation out (by the time you take into account travel and accommodation).

It is also possible (but more complex) to train to another nations PPL syllabus and convert a foreign licence to a JAR one, but this is more complex / risky.

Examples of organisations offering flying training abroad and the advertised costs can easily be found by buying one of the GA Monthly magazines, such as Flyer, Pilot or Today's Pilot [BRL - no Web links and magazines listed alphabetically to avoid any possible impression that one were better than another].

There is one certain Florida based training organisation that regularly monitors this NG and would be more than happy to mail you details / information, I'm sure!

If you choose to go the US route, make sure that you cover yourself and apply for a student visa. This has been done to death in recent months and an example thread is linked below:

US Visas for Flying Training

Another discussion with a new PPL starter that offers some good words of advice:
Some words of advice for a new starter!

Some discussion of foreign training and the implications on getting a UK PPL are in the thread below:
Overseas Training Discussions

The list of relevant threads is endless. Suggest you have a look at some of these, look at the CAA Web site (which gives an overview of what is required for a JAR PPL), read a few of the monthly GA magazines and get a feel for the sort of questions to ask before you go talking to any one FTO.

Sorry ths is a bit vague, but there seems to have been a plethora of this kind of question lately - maybe Danny will let BRL set up a FAQ section on flying training issues!
