R/T when transiting near CTA before Class D

Hello

Disclaimers:
This may be mainly relevant for the UK.
Yes I’ve tried to search for this being asked, no I haven’t found what I wanted.
Yes I should ask my instructor, but I would also like to get varied opinions and show some initiative.

So, I’m planning a flight for tomorrow, where I’m (so far) looking to use an airfield with flight information services as a waypoint before hopefully getting a zone transit through class D, on which the airfield is just on the edge of. This was a loose route noted by my instructor so not put pen to paper yet.

Although the initial route is to fly over the airfield above their CTA height, I’m aware it’s good airmanship to call them up while nearby. I’m also aware that I will need to get on the radio to the class D controller early to negotiate the clearance.

My question is, is there a preferred way/order/timing of contacting both the FISO at the smaller waypoint airfield, and the controller in the class D prior to zone transit?
….. Or is the most realistic and easier option to just not use the smaller airfield as the turning waypoint and use something in the general area but with less risk/complication?

Talk to approach/radar of Class D first, state your intentions and routing and that you will require a transit. As you approach the FISO controlled airfield, let the Class D approach know you are going to give the FISO airfield a call to briefly state you are passing through their overhead. Do that, then switch back to Class D approach.

Given the location of the FISO airfield, the Class D controller most likely will also be in contact with the FISO via phone so the radio call to the FISO might not even be required.

If in doubt, Class D always takes priority as you require a clearance. Be prepared to adapt your routing and calls w.r.t. the amount of traffic the Class D controller is handling.

Absolutely - I recall that several years ago I was intending to transit directly overhead and 1000 feet above the CTZ of an airfield near the south coast, and on speaking to the airfield in question discovered that they were dropping paratroops from 10000 feet above the airfield in question. And no, there wasn't a NOTAM and no, it wasn't a regular parapdrop site. A simple call and a small track adjustment prevented any possibility of conflict.

When you say you intend to fly over the FISO airfield 'above CTA height' I assume you mean 'ATZ' height?

...and if in transit you should really be using the aerodrome QNH so you should be thinking Altitude, NOT Height.

TOO
