Garmin G5 question

Hey all,
We've recently updated the panel on our C172 with 2 Garmin G5's. We're having some issues with the headings matching up (to themselves or to anything actually!), but that's being taken care of by the installation shop in the next week or so.

However, one question I have is this. One of the features of the G5 is to give an audible beep when you get close the altitude you set on the altitude bug. The installer is saying that's not possible without the autopilot but I don't really believe him on that. According to the manual on section 2.1.3.2 it specifically says

The Altitude Alerting function provides the pilot with a visual alert and tone when approaching the Selected Altitude.

My question is, does anyone here have the Garmin G5's without an autopilot that has an audible tone tied to the altitude bug??

There are a lot of avionic boxes that give audible warnings for timers and other functions but most of those require a tone generator to be fitted, are you sure the Garmin manual is not just talking about an output signal for this function rather than it producing a tone internally ?

Next time I select an altitude I'll have a listen, but I'm away for Easter week. (No autopilot in ours)

I guess the hard part would be wiring the audio out wire from the G5 into a switched or unswitched port on your audio panel to patch the alert sounds thru to your headset, otherwise you’re not going to hear it very well.

My Aspen has an altitude alert tone generator attached to the coaming and is not connected to the audio. However, its very loud and is easily heard during flying....unlike the Stec disconnect!

I would expect any avionic installer worth his salt to properly integrate a new system that he was fitting................. unless the customer had pinned him down to a rock bottom price in the hope of getting a bargain.
