We all know pilots who are "past their sell by date" but it is not age related and a skill check flight probably wouldn't show any weaknesses. However, we all need to be self critical, as we get older our reaction time slows down and our thought process gets muddled, probably we have made errors that have not had consequences, it is because we are experienced that we get away with mistakes.
Back in the summer I was chatting to a visiting older pilot, he had a complex aircraft, but his chat was rather confused, at the time I thought he was just eccentric which is not unusual, a week later he undershot a landing.
Wrecked the aircraft but walked away with minor injuries, later other pilots also said they had worries about his ability, all he did was set the wrong flap position then not recognise it.
There comes a time we all stop flying there needs to be much more attention to being self critical.
