It’s interesting to note that he only gets airborne because the end of the strip drops away. When I did a mountain soaring course at Omarama, my instructor pointed out the various top-dressing strips in the area for use in emergency.
He pointed out the white patches at one end of each strip and indicated that those always showed the uphill end of the strip, because of the phosphate that had been spilled during loading.
