Anway, "stirring platitude" is an oxymoron, I'm sure you didin't mean that!
A platitude is a trite, meaningless, or prosaic statement, generally directed at quelling social, emotional, or cognitive unease. Platitudes are geared towards presenting a shallow, unifying wisdom over a difficult topic. However, they are too general and overused to be anything more than undirected statements with ultimately little meaningful contribution towards a solution.
Examples could be statements such as "it is what it is", "meet in the middle", "busy as a bee", "method to my madness", "better late than never", "just be yourself", "burning the midnight oil", "strength is something you choose" and "nobody's perfect". Platitudes are generally a form of thought-terminating cliché.

To be correct it is actual an extract from Theodore Roosevelt's speech called, “Citizenship in a Republic”. Very stirring platitudes.

I prefer the OED definition for platitude; 'A remark or statement, especially one with a moral content, that has been used too often to be interesting or thoughtful'

A close friend said always have options. If I crashed and hurt myself, I had none. I couldn't go home and I couldn't afford the operation here. So therfore I should not have flown. It was a risk I took. I'm sorry to have taken that risk and now put my family and friends through this sad episode. Too proud to ask for help because this is all my fault, I was in a dyer situation, in a cast with a broken back looking at doctors who also did not know what to do. There were no options. I'm not one for panicking, but I was full on panicking and is not nice I can tell you.
You guys, through your actions and funding, have literally saved me, you have saved a human being. Quite a good one or so I think, if a little stupid and over ambitious, so I will start thanking you now and will thank you all for ever more for my welfare. I feel as if I have been thrown a life line, your life line. You pulled me away from the panic, you gave me another option. Thank you is all I can say. Colin Hales.

Begs the question why he didn't have medical insurance. It should be a be part of the planning for such a journey. Aye, there's the rub - planning.
As to the engine and aircraft ... if anyone has read Colin's self penned articles they will be well aware of the levels he has pushed both to. I'm not surprised at the outcome.

I merely posted that he had a mishap.
Colin's ex girlfriend, Zanna McKail, deserves all the credit for some amazing fundraising.
We could all do with ex girlfriends like that.
He has his op this week and to avoid conjecture has posted "It wasn't the engine".

Oh and get better soon Colin, and don't worry about the risk management thing, we all do crazy sh&t from time to time.
Hope he's doing OK. If it wasn't the engine, I wonder what else could cause a forced landing onto a golf course a couple of hours into a flight. Fuel, weather, fire...

Very sadly for Colin Itzy suffered engine failure and he had to make a forced landing on a golf course in Aioi, Hyogo Prefecture, Japan.
If it was not the engine then why would they put this?

Latest news from Colin.
Surgery went well and thanks for all the good wishes. I still have blurred vision so can't read them all individually to reply.
I've had three visitors now, Yukari Uenami, who came bearing wonderful food parcels, my friend Yoichi Robert Inoue who brought more of his cheerful nature and Mifi, who had come dressed as a nurse to stay with me, since Red Cross Bear is still being detained by the police.

I've only just learned about this, and read the thread.
I've had a bit of interaction with Colin Hales over the years, and he is every thing I always thought being English was all supposed to be about.
He is the real deal, an unassuming type of bloke who does outstanding things very quietly and with a good heart. At least that's what I have seen, and I've heard nothing bad said about him either as an engineer or as a person.
I hope he heals OK and quickly. I really do.

Colin has just sent me a message asking me to stop telling people that:
1. He didn't have medical insurance.
2. He didn't have permission to enter Japan.
For the record:
1. It was my understanding/assumption that he didn't have medical insurance, as if he was insured then the crowdfunding would not have been necessary. That being said, it does appear he had medical insurance. My assumption was therefore incorrect.
2. I've never stated that he didn't have permission to enter Japan. What I did say is that he clearly didn't receive permission to fly his aircraft in Japan in advance of his arrival.
Hopefully this clears things up? If not, please post!
