Also, and alas, private flying, notwithstanding the comparative low cost of it for many compared with big cars and boats, is seen as "elitist" which makes it a really good target for environmentalists and complainers! Try running a flying school on the edge of a left wing/ liberal populated university city if you want an example of prejudice against aviation! Didn't you notice the Airport at the bottom of you garden madam when you bought the house!

Another problem may well come from the recent announcement by government that they want to see "225,000 - 275,000" new homes per annum built over the coming years. They also say that the Green Belt will continue to be protected.
Whilst I don't doubt that there is a need for new homes, owners of airports like Sutton Harbour Holdings in Plymouth and others wanting to shut airports and build houses on them must have broken out the champagne when they heard that!
