Petition to classify airfields greenfields

Latest petition to stop developers building on airfields. I don't think it is an existing thread.

As others have said, it is unlikely that airfields can be reclassified as green belt land. What we should be petitioning for is what John Prescott promised 20 years ago - that airfields should be excluded from the automatic assumption that, as brownfield site, they are first in the queue for development.

Prescott ratted on that and since then, no minister has thought of correcting the 'drafting error'. Strange that..

That said I've signed

This week a number of UK new build towns and estates were announced.

It may well be the case that an ex. military airport will be the best spot for such a development.

That said if it is used for private flying it would seem more reasonable to agree with the closing and redevelopment BUT with the proviso that there should not be a loss of amenity and require a Section 106 agreement having the developer replace the lost runway and hangars in the vicinity.

no-one ever looks at those petitions

They count the number of voters and what the papers will write - private flying is (wrongly) seen as a very expensive hobby engaged in by a few people.

At a time when everyone is crying out for more houses and preferably not built anywhere near anyone airfields are a really desireable taregt - and since no-one makes any real money out of them..............................
