Calling Asthmatics - UK Class 2 and Asmtha (Bronchial Test Required)
Hi,
Posted in "Medical" last week, but thought I might get a better response here, as I'm now looking to any Class 2 Asthmatic Pilots for where they went for their Bronchial Test as I surely can't be the first!
Originally got my initial class 2 back in Jan 2013. BUT the AME did not request Spirometry or Bronchial Reactivity Test, so I was issued with paperwork and went on my way. I am now 42 so it is renewal time, and different AME is now requesting them as they weren't done originally.
Spirometry test completed free of charge at my GP's.
AME referred me back to my GP for them to refer me for a "Bronchial Test", but they simply said I need to find it myself.
So, I have rung a respiratory consultant in Leeds, where the initial consultation fee is £205 then the tests would be extra!
I was wondering whether it is possible just to go straight to the tests, either the 6 min free running OR the chemical test?

Regards
Kevin

I think the rules changed in Sept 2012 ONLY for INITIAL class 2 applications. Don't think they apply retrospectively..... BUT for me.....
I had my initial class 2 done in Jan 2013, and now it is my renewal with a different AME who is saying I need to have done what I should have had done back at my initial in 2013.
Thereafter, for each renewal I won't have to repeat these tests as they are a one off for Class 2's.
But I have no idea where to go. AME referred me to my GP. My GP says I need to source it privately. Called a local clinic who want £205 for initial consultation, not including any tests... downgrading to a LAPL might be the way forward here.

Is the medical requirement less for the LAPL ??
It's AME issued so surely he'll ask for the same thing all over again.
I know £205 seems a lot of £££ but really I'd just pay it and get it out of the way......................

£205 is just for the initial consultation. The tests will then be extra. Then there will be another summary consultation...
I just want to have the tests as required :-(
I expect to pay a couple of hundred, but hopefully not £600 or thereabouts.

I think part of the problem is that this isnt a test we normally employ. A quick review of the literature shows most research articles are from the last century and the test is positive in all sorts of people without asthma and the relationship between the test and asthma is unclear.....
I wonder why the CAA have started demanding this test and how they use the results??? I ask out of ignorance as someone who manages severe asthma on a daily basis.
Sadly when you need a rare test the places you can get it done and the prices demanded become a problem. Reading up on how to do it the test seems to be worthy of well under £50
Anyone else know anything more???? What am I missing????
