I visited (by bike) for the first time this past weekend and it was very much active. The team there are very friendly and there's a good mixture of home-builts, microlights and a couple of helicopters. I understand fixed wing land don't have to pay landing fees but not sure if there is a weight limit on this. It's around 800m grass from memory - the website has more details.
How's access to the Airfield by car?
Easy access via Aveley Road however. Suggest you put "Microlight Sport Aviation" into Google maps to get directions.

Damyns Hall
Damyns Hall Aerodrome, Damyns Hall Airfield, Damyns Hall, Flying Schools, Aircraft Storage, Events, Film Location, Showground, Essex Airfield, EGML
Note no landing fee..
No ATC so blind calls only.
Lovely place. With about 30 aircraft based.
Nice onsite Cafe but i does close early.
Ref by road, no problem. But not well sign posted.
But there is a green RVP sign by entrance.
Large car park to the right as you drive in.

It was quite busy last time we went there, 3 chaps (us!) tucking into breakfast.
Seriously though, it is run in a very low key way. If Deepak (the resident microlight instructor) is there he will usually respond to radio calls even if he is out instructing he will impart airfield information. Do make blind calls if you don't get any response to your first call.
