Airport parking fee

Hello everyone,
I'm a student pilot based in Minnesota and is going to be licensed very soon. I wanted to ask how FBOs and airports charge their fees in general.

Let's say that I take a plane out for a trip and park it overnight at an airport...
I read that FBOs could charge a parking fee that could be waived if I get fuel.. Do airports have any free parkings for smaller planes?
How about those very small airports think grass strip and such) that don' t even have an FBO. Could I just park the plane on the side of the runway and camp for the night for free?

Thanks a lot for your answers!

Whenever I've toured in the USA, I think once ever have I been charged a landing fee (normal in much of the rest of the world, and a definite enhancing feature of the USA) and around half the time I might be charged an overnight parking fee, typically in the order of $10-$20/night.

It's true that around the world some places will waive landing or parking fees if you buy enough fuel, but I wouldn't rely upon it.

Small grass strip airports - yes, again around the world parking up and camping under the wing is pretty common. It's always best to phone (for some reason most US FBOs never answer their emails!) and check it's okay, but usually it will be. Again, a some might charge you a few tens of dollars, some won't. It'll never cost you a lot regardless.

I will say you my experiences so you can imagine how it is in Europe, in my home and neighbouring countries.

Usually, I rent airplane from same operator. The operator has agreement with several airports regarding landing and handling fees, fuel etc. It means that when I land at airport, I do not pay anything. Parking, landing and handling fee is charged from operator. I pay to operator full price that includes airplane rent, fuel, parkings, landing fee.

But now, some things have been changed, so I pay less price to operator, but I am responsible to pay fees at the airport when I land. It means I have to have cash or credit card with me. I get invoice for that.

Usually, parking is free for the first 4 hours. After 4 hours, I pay 2 EUR per ton for 24 hours parking. It means that with C150 with MTOW 730 kg, I pay 2 EUR per day for parking. For C172 which is a little bit over 1000 kg, I pay 4 EUR per day.

For small grass strips, I contact operator and sometime they have parking fee, sometimes not.

Hope it helped,
