If anyone is interested, Terry Holloway is running promotional stuff in social media for a lecture at the Cambridge Aero Club on the 23rd of October ...

Apparently he is "thrilled to introduce an aviation wonder-woman" ...

I think this one could be forgiven for taking an airliner across the oceans, especially as he has clearly said that he did so.

I see no issue with that.

But who is he talking about?

For anyone who missed it, here is another opportunity to hear from Ms Curtis-Taylor herself, ask any questions, and draw your own conclusions:

So, Winter Enrichment...as in "let's network to make more money and meet more gullible sponsors".

Free lecturers ? Do they mean that or should it be free lectures? - Either way something is free for a charge of £3.

I see the mendacious madam is still wearing the RAF pilot's wings she is not entitled to, unless of course her flying suit is fancy dress.

I am interested in what was said at the presentation. If she stayed on topic it may have been a good night. However I do wonder how long it was before she told everyone that Captain Brown had it easy - none of those silly airspace restrictions and procedures to worry about, unlike her own round-the-world solo trials.

In her defence I suspect that it could be an old photo since she appears to be wearing her, now lapsed, Artemis sponsorship tag.
Notwithstanding the grammatical error, I had to smile at: "expect tales of daring and a spirit of adventure from Tracey, a modern aviatrix that defies convention" ( My italics).

On her Wicki Site she now confirms the cause of the Winslow incident.
"In spring 2016 Curtis-Taylor started a US Transcontinental Flight, with multiple stops along the historic US Airmail Routes, flying from Seattle to Los Angeles and the Transcontinental route from LA to NY. The trip was cut short by a crash in the Arizona desert due to contaminated fuel. "

Whilst that just might have caused an engine failure, I don't think it necessarily follows that you need to crash, just because the engine cuts out.

But hey, what do I know? I'm just sitting here, solo, at my PC. I don't have the benefit of being able to rely on a guy with thousands of hours experience and intimate knowledge of the aircraft.

Just to clarify, nowhere is there any assertion that the witch herself is behind this Wiki page. She's not saying it was contaminated fuel, Wiki is stating that it was. She can deny saying so, if the lawyers from the fuel supplier get uppity, as they well might.

Haraka (#3863),

..."along the historic US Airmail Routes,"....... Was Winslow on the historic US Airmail Routes , then ?

..."due to contaminated fuel"... Was there any evidence of this ? Did any other aircraft report it ? Was it investigated, by whom, and what was the result ?

The edits on that wiki page today and yesterday make good reading.

I was told, by the FBO staff, that the NTSB & the FAA found no evidence of fuel contamination. Also of note, is that her chase plane was also refuelled, and it didn't crash.

She's not saying it was contaminated fuel
The fuel story arose immediately after the crash.
The trip was cut short by a crash in the Arizona desert due to contaminated fuel.
The page now reads
The trip was cut short by a crash in the Arizona desert, cause unknown
Danny, from the accident report
Postaccident examination of the airplane and engine run did not reveal any evidence of any preexisting anomalies that would have precluded normal operation; therefore, the reason for the partial loss of engine power could not be determined
No fuel contamination, despite post #1764
It is therefore interesting to note that, on his website, Ewald most recently tells us that the cause of the crash was "contaminated fuel and other reason"

It does seem as if the whitewashing continues unabated. We removed the fuel contamination story as untrue (still riding that horse!), looks like Ewald then put it back, we then removed again (after seeing the post here) and now it's been put back again.

Perhaps time to put the (disappeared) crash into the helicopter back on there as well? :-)

Given the FAA report stating "for reasons that could not be determined", it seems a little difficult to maintain the fuel contamination story - but hey, why let the truth get in the way. Ewald has clearly been learning some of the tricks of the trade, and that this thread still has some running to do...

Safe flights, Sam.

NTSB Identification: WPR16LA106
14 CFR Part 91: General Aviation
Accident occurred Wednesday, May 11, 2016 in Winslow, AZ
Probable Cause Approval Date: 12/12/2016
Aircraft: BOEING B75N1, registration: N56200
Injuries: 2 Uninjured.
NTSB investigators may not have traveled in support of this investigation and used data provided by various sources to prepare this aircraft accident report.
The private pilot reported that, earlier in the day, she had flown three flights, totaling about 5 hours of flight time, which included uneventful takeoffs from two airports with a higher density altitude than that which existed at the accident airport; the calculated density altitude at the time of the accident was about 7,223 ft.
The pilot reported that, before takeoff for the accident flight, she conducted an engine run-up and pretakeoff checks, which included leaning the mixture to account for the density altitude. She also conducted a static-power check, which was in the normal range. The pilot reported that, during takeoff for the personal cross-country flight, the airplane accelerated and climbed out normally with the tachometer indicating 2,250 rpm. As the airplane climbed to about 50 ft above ground level, the engine began to lose power, and the airplane started to descend. The pilot turned the airplane left to maintain clearance from obstacles and verified the throttle, mixture, propeller, fuel, and carburetor heat settings. Subsequently, the airplane struck the ground and rolled about 20 ft, the right main landing gear impacted vegetation, and the airplane cart-wheeled. The pilot reported that, just before landing, she observed the tachometer indicating 2,000 rpm.

It is likely that the engine’s partial loss of power, in combination with the high-density altitude, prevented the airplane from being able to maintain a positive climb rate during takeoff. Postaccident examination of the airplane and engine run did not reveal any evidence of any preexisting anomalies that would have precluded normal operation; therefore, the reason for the partial loss of engine power could not be determined.

The National Transportation Safety Board determines the probable cause(s) of this accident as follows:
• The partial loss of engine power during takeoff initial climb in high-density altitude conditions for reasons that could not be determined because a postaccident examination of the airplane and engine revealed no anomalies.
