Getting a PPL

Has anyone got any clues as to how a military pilot goes about getting a PPL.

Assuming you mean a PPL(A), take a look at GID21: Requirements for JAR-FCL PPL (Aeroplane). It contains details of the allowances against PPL training requirements for Qualified Service Pilots. You'll need Adobe's Acrobat reader if you haven't got it.
