Is my Visual Acuity OK?

Hi Folks

Hoping there is someone on forum who can advise.

I have an NPPL Doctors medical declaration for flying which I believe is the same level as that for a professional driver (HGV etc).

However I just want to confirm that my measured visual acuity meets the medical requirement (just been tested with a significant reduction of vision in my right eye).

Left Eye 6/6 Right Eye 6/15 both unaided.

Any feedback would be valued.

As long as its corrected to 6/6 then you're fine, I believe.

Hi CA

Unfortunately it cannot be corrected with specs or surgery. However the medical does allow for a poor eye, even if corrected - just not sure how bad it is allowed to be?

I believe 6/6 is the metric equivalent of 20/20 so that's pretty good. However, if you're going to get correction for 6/15 you might as well go for an improvement in the other eye as well. This could possibly bring both eyes up to 6/5 or even 6/4. Think how much safer you will feel if you do this. You could have the lenses put into some cool looking shades of your choice.

My understanding is that providing you can hit 6/6 in one eye, the other can be as bad as 6/60.

That's where I was at, but concerned I was not reading the acuity scales correctly.

Thanks for the feedback all.

I know a number of pilots with only one eye including 3 military ones.

You need to look at AMC1 MED.B.070 Visual system in AMC and GM to Part Med
(e) Uncorrected visual acuity
No limits apply to uncorrected visual acuity.

Vocational driving standards are here

https://www.gov.uk/current-medical-g...-a-to-c#acuity

Group 2 entitlement vocational – lorries, buses
Drivers must have a visual acuity, using corrective lenses if necessary, of at least 6/7.5 (0.8 decimal) in the better eye and at least 6/60 (Snellen, decimal 0.1) in the other eye.
