Im trying to find out who the pilot is in this picture
Photo :: G-ASNC D5 HUSKY 1 BELVOIR and who took the picture as well, it was taken around 1963/64. I have asked the people that run that website and they have thrown the question over to their membership.

Reason Im asking is I got to fly the same aircraft around Belvoir castle a couple of weeks back and would like to marry these two pictures together with all the info etc.

Maybe you already know this but GINFO shows the registered owner as Beagle Aircraft Ltd at Rearsby from manufacture (1963) till 1968 so maybe a pilot in the employ?

A quick check in the Flight archives shows Trevor Howard was a pilot for Beagle at that time.

Slight thread drift, but I hadn't appreciated before, how big the Husky's fin is.

What was the reason for the increased area? Just because of a more powerful engine or some other aerodynamic reason?

good collection of names, thank you. Some we had, just looking for confirmation.

The first picture that caught my eye was from http://austerhg.org/beagle_mags/volume_2.pdf page 2. that Magazine is dated Jan 1965 and the leafs on the trees suggest summertime, so 1963 to 1964 has to be the year range. The aircraft was re-painted yellow around 1967 and the extra perspex was added to lower half of the door around then as well. There is another picture within those magazines of the aircraft checking power lines! we are not going to recreate that one

Having now attempted to recreate the picture it seemed to me that they had most likely taking off from the grass strip at Belvoir and snapped the shots as they climbed out. that fits with the location of the strip today and the angle on the castle. we had the the dukes permission to buzz round his house and gardens and with hindsight should have asked to land there!

* not sure about the extended fin, think they just wanted to make the weather cocking capabilities a bit more character building! the Auster D5 had a 160hp engine, I have not flown one of those so cant comment on if the change is needed/warranted between the two.

Just a thought but might that picture be in an archive copy of the Nottingham Evening Post with an article or footnote as to who was flying it?

I would have thought the picture would have made the local news media.

technically you don't, the Castle is in G airspace and as long as you follow the 500ft rule everything is good. having a quick orbit around somewhere on route is one thing, but having two aircraft buzz round 5 times on a Sunday morning is bound to upset someone. There are horse stables there, tourists, farms and a 'grass strip' etc so PPR/landowners permission is always a good thing.

I have it on good authority that its Mr H.T.Howard flying the Husky 50 years ago, he was one of the company's test pilot for Beagle Aircraft (Rearsby)
