Full Sutton Airfield
Good evening guys,
I completed my PPL last year at Northumbria Flying School, Newcastle Airport. I am originally from the NE and started my training there so even though I don't live there anymore, finishing my PPL there was the suitable option (In my mind).
I now live in York and am looking for an airfield to fly from as well as Newcastle (where I'll fly most of my family and friends from). I've always liked the idea of Full Sutton and am writing today asking for reviews of the club and the airfield.
I intend to continue towards CPL/IR training so would be looking to hour build. I'm trying to avoid the 'get in get out' hour building mentality and am subsequently looking for a social environment where I can meet more like minded folk. From what I've seen Full Sutton should be able to provide this.
As I have no grass strip experience I would be looking to take several lessons first to make sure I'm comfortable with unlicensed operations. I'm glad to have my experience of busy airports but would now like to broaden my experience. What are the instructors like? Particularly for PPL holders looking to gain a broader flying skill set?
Any replies or PM's would be appreciated. I'm looking to visit the club first before committing to any membership payments/ flight bookings. I will be looking to fly the PA28, most probably the Cherokee over the Warrior originally. I also like the idea of Aerobatics and some advanced handling such as upset recovery.
Could anyone provide some information/ reviews of flying around the general area too?
Once again I'd appreciate any info anyone could provide and I hope to see some of you soon up at the airfield!
Thanks
George

I don't know what you mean by "short strips" Full Sutton is 772 mtrs. 04/22 Grass. All circuits to the north side avoiding the Prison which isn't difficult as it is so close to the airfield your circuit will be outside it.
It is quite rural and has few rules.
Pop over to see us any time. No Café I'm afraid. Just tea and biscuits. Scones at the weekend.

Come and give York Flying School a visit too, based at Breighton. Another top unlicensed airfield with plenty going on and a good social scene. Cafe at weekends and self-service tea/coffee honesty-box at all other times. We don't have a PA28, but we have a cracking C172 available for self fly hire for £130/hr.
Definitely worth a look if you live in York.

I live in York too (to the South West) - Sherburn Aero Club, where I am a member and currently doing my PPL, is a pleasant 20 minute drive from me.
Well worth a visit - great people and thoroughly enjoying my training.
Would be happy to show you around if you wish.

We must be going for some sort of record here, three well run, friendly, and supportive clubs, all within a short drive of each other.
I have visited all three, and can vouch for everything stated above.
Now, if only we had that North of the Border
