Setup a straight glide and hope you see the ground before you leave the cloud.
Shouldn't you "hope to leave the cloud before you see the ground"?

Not that I'm advocating untrained pilots flying VFR into IMC, the vacuum pump does not need the engine to be running - it merely needs the engine to be turning. Windmilling props still run the vacuum pump, although with less than normal pressure.
