Duxford Safety Day 13th April 2013

On 13th April, to kick-off the flying season, IWM Duxford are again holding an informal Safety Bonus Day.
Discounted Landing Fee; Free Admission.

Following the successful events in the last six years, the Safety Day will again be a mixture of informal presentations and opportunities to chat to the professionals. The presentations will be repeated, so you can arrive and leave when it suits you best.

In recognition of the importance of the Safety theme, there’s no charge for the Safety Day programme and the landing fee is discounted to £7. Also on 13th April if the weather is poor, or if you can’t fly in, you can come in free by car – but you must pre-book. You can, of course visit the museum during the day, so there's lots to do -- book early to get the best slots.

There is a fantastic array of approachable experts to talk to about safety and answer any questions that may have been bothering you.

The Safety Day Programme:

The presentations 11.30 - 13.30 repeated 14.00 - 16.00 (local time) are:

Nick Wilcock AOPA: The UK IMC Rating - an update

Steve Barett & Dan Batty D&D: How D&D can help you

Ian Simpson Met Office: Weather - Even more things to spoil your day

John Gentleman GA Navigation Group: GPS Navigation

David Cockburn CAA: Collision Avoidance

This year there are even more informal table-top sessions. They run continuously from 10.30 - 16.30 (local time):

NATS: 6 table-tops - Infringements; London FISOs, AFPEx, Notams/AIP, Farnborough LARS, D&D. The NATS team will include Jonathan Smith, Jon Bolton, Neil Blaskett, Tobin Berry, Steve Frejek, Hannah Clarke, Chris Matthews, Jo Suter, Andy MacKnight, Dan Batty and Steve Barrett.

Carol Cooper Andrewsfield: CFI Corner - licencing; renewals; ratings; all you wanted to ask - does anybody understand the licencing changes?

The teams giving more formal presentations will also be running table-tops (AOPA, CAA, Met Office, GA Nav Group), so if you need a one-to-one discussion, you will catch these experts at the table-top, as well as in the presentation room.

Guided Tours (free) of Hangar 4 (Battle of Britain Exhibition) and the museum's popular AirSpace, conducted by Duxford experts, will run in the morning and repeated in the afternoon.

Call 01223 833376 to register your interest, book your landing slot for PPR/Briefing, or to book your car in and to receive the program for the day.

The airfield will open early to cater for the many visitors expected, book slots are limited, so call soon.

Other Bonus and Event Days planned for 2013 -- dates for your diary:

Bulldog and Pup Bonus Day - Saturday 11th May
LAA and RSA Bonus Day - Saturday 8th June
Rans RV and Pilot Magazine Bonus Day - Saturday 20th July
British Women Pilots' Association Bonus Day - Saturday 17th August
AOPA Day - Saturday 14th September (book via AOPA)

Further information about the Bonus Days and information for fly-in visitors can be found on the web site:
IWM Duxford | Imperial War Museums
and follow the flying at Duxford links.

Peter Loweth, whom many pilots will have met at Duxford events, is organising the Bonus Days this year, but I will be keeping an eye on the forum on his behalf and hope to see many forum folk at Duxford during the next few months.

By the way, don't forget that you can fly in to the Flying Legends Airshow at IWM Duxford on 13th and 14th July. Call the tower 01223 833376.

The popular slots in the 10-11 time band are getting pretty full now. But the airfield will open early at 09.30 and there are plenty of slots later at the moment.

However, if you want to arrive mid-morning, you need to book your slot now. 01223 833376.

UPDATE

Sorry to say, that I missed including the GASCo table-top presentation in my summary of the day, above. Mike O'Donoghue and colleagues will be at Duxford and will be manning one of the table-tops. GASCo have taken over the well-known Safety Evenings from the CAA, and their slant on safety is very well received. Apologies to Mike and GASCo -- they are regulars at Duxford.
