BP, If I recall I'm pretty certain the QNH at the time was 1011

Hi, I thought FL11 was actually FL110 (11000ft +-) or else it would have been given as 1100ft and not as FL011.

Have you tried hitting the encoder with a hammer? !

Well, I finally got around, hopefully, to resolving this problem today, and it would appear the cause was not what I was expecting!

When I removed the encoder I heard something rattling inside, removed the cover and one of the small nuts which holds the pcb to the case had come adrift, when I looked closely at it I could see black deposits on the nut, the type I'd associate with arcing!

So I conclude the random altitude transmissions where a result of said nut shorting out on the pcb. Just hoping the shorting hasn't damaged the electronics

If the PCB is damaged the encoder is scrap, if it is an Ameri-King there is a good chance I have a used one that I could sell you.

Okay thanks, haven't tested it yet, but it is an Ameri-King, I might be in touch!

And I'm sure A&C has an 8130-3 or an EASA Form 1 for the part.

8130 !

Hi wigglyamp, you are quite right I do have the 8130 for the unit, I checked my stock and it is not a used one but a new item that has become surplus to my requirements.

And I know the item is a genuine one because you supplied it to me.

Well done A&C - we wouldn't want bogus parts being installed .
I'm glad you could find the cert - since we relocated, heaven knows where we've stored the archives!
