NPPL/SLMG to NPPL/SSEA Differences training on RANS S6 Group A

Hi

My Son wishes to convert is NPPL/SLMG to NPPL/SSEA , I understand that only differences training is required with an instructor to achieve this.

The ultimate aim is for him to be able to fly a RANS S6-116 Group A that we intend to share. Q Can his differences training be conducted on the RANS ?
It,s an LAA Permit kit built. Also does he need to be a co-owner ?

I am getting variable advice and help would be welcome.

I understand that if he is a part-owner then paid for training is fine. However not if its for a rating, which I think is what he is after:

So unless you find an instructor who will do the training for free you are going to struggle (if they do it for free then its not air work and so its legal)...

CAA treat members of the same family living at the same address as the same sole owner. So if he still lives with you, and there are no other joint owners who live elsewhere, that's not an issue.

Regarding the training itself, the rules are here; and it shows that holding an NPPL(SLMG). Burrow down a bit and you find that...

2.1 Pilots with valid licences and ratings
NPPL (SLMG) or UK PPL (A) SLMG to NPPL (SSEA)
The holder of a valid NPPL with SLMG Class Rating or UK PPL (A) SLMG who wishes to obtain a
SSEA Class Rating shall:
a. Produce the NPPL or UK PPL (A) SLMG;
b. Produce log book evidence of having satisfactorily completed SSEA conversion training with a
FI(A) or CRI(SPA) on single-engine piston aeroplanes;
c. Hold a valid NPPL Medical Declaration or Part-MED LAPL, Class 1 or 2 medical certificate.

So confusing

Thanks for your replies ,the CAA wording is fairly clear in the context of paid instruction in this matter, to paraphrase he would have to have a P1 privilege to receive and pay for an instructor which defeats the object. How then does it follow that if he were able to find an Instructor willing to do the conversion for free that can do so? I need to correct my original question it's not differences training its conversion training for a rating.

I should also add that the LAA say he can convert on the RANS, I have had two differing opinions from NPPL. My money is on the replies here today.

Is there an Instructor out there who will do the conversion for free who has experience on a 912 RANS S6 ? Travel expenses covered .......

Since it is an LAA Permit aircraft I assume that you, at least, are an LAA Member. Have you tried contacting the nearest LAA Coach and asking him/her the question? As suggested above also ensure that the aircraft permit and insurance cover conversion training.

As a sole owner, your son can learn to fly on your aircraft. He can train towards an EASA or non-EASA licence or rating, for issue, renewal and revalidation of a licence or rating.

See AIC W001/2011 and ANO Article 50 et seq for details. There is a flow chart at the end of the AIC which is easy to follow.

Techincal Leaflet 2.09 on the LAA website is currently being updated to reflect changes as a result of EASA Part FCL. However, training towards an NPPL has not changed. If you have any questions, I suggest you contact the LAA Pilot Coaching Scheme who will be able to answer your questions.
