UK & other EU airplanes on FAA PPL

With the mass of changez to rules etc in the UK in recent years I am confused about the rules concerning FAA licences and UK/EU registered airplanes.

When I left the UK almost a decade ago the 'rules' were quite simple - one could fly a G airplane on an FAA PPL in UK airspace or in other EU airspace with written permission from the relevant country's aviation authority. Alternatively one could get a CAA UK PPL on the basis of the FAA PPL.

The present position has me confused - if when next in the UK I would like to do some flying possibly with a trip to France but am not clear on the right licences - the option of hiring an 'N' registered airplane is a fix but there appears not to be any for hire near to were I stay.

Any general info on the subject or directions to a definitive Internet article/site would be appreciated.
