I spent a long time flying a type fitted with carb temp gauges. Must admit they seemed to be very good, they showed that the temperature in the carbs was always conducive to icing. When carb heat was applied they unsurprisingly showed the temperature rise and then fall again on release.

Total waste of space though, better off using your ears, the rpm gauge, or manifold pressure gauge if you have a constant speed prop.

The gauge allows you to apply just enough carb heat to get the temp out of the icing range. A very useful instrument IMHO.
