Spitfire MK IX down in Southern Germany

Eschbach: Grosseinsatz: Oldtimer-Flugzeug muss in Bremgarten notlanden - badische-zeitung.de

Ouch

Experienced British pilot went for a local flight. During approach, one landing gear jammed, pilot continued to empty the tanks and then performed a belly landing on grass. No injuries.

Bremgarten specializes in warbird restauration and maintenance.

Their workmanship on the various P-51s, Spitfires, Corsairs, 109s and so on that they have been rebuilding and looking after looks fantastic.

MJ772 had only recently been flown after long period of inactivity - hopefully the damage is light and their expertise will have her back in the air before too long.

It passed my home may be a minute or so prior to the emergency as i was filling the trunk of my ladys car.

Since last year mid/end of March it is a quite common view over here. Always nice to hear the engine and see it flying by at low level.

Here is a link to itīs history:

Spitfire airborne in Germany

And here the german website of the owner:

Supermarine Spitfire Mk IX - Royal Air Force - Air Fighter Academy

"Supermarine Spitfire Mk IX TR 'D-FMKN'
This Spitfire with the standard number MJ772, type VS509 (T9) comes from the factory at Castle Bromwich. It was delivered in December, 1943 to the Royal Air Force in Lyneham and was passed on in January, 1944 to the French RAF-Squadron No.341 stationed in Cornwall (Alsace). After more than 50 applications it had to be given after damages in repair and came with the tactical call sign 'GW-A' provided to the Squadron No.340 (Ile de France) from where she graduated from approx. 340 applications over Normandy. In August, 1944 the Spitfire was handed over to the Ground Support Unit GSU No.84 and later to the GSU No.83, Thorney Iceland."

As you can see itīs not the first belly landing for this one .

Hopefully i see it in the air again later this year, Rainer

Flying again soon ;-D

Everything is repaired and painted!

Last Friday the overhauled engine went in so i expect her flying within a short time. Have a look at her whole history at MeierMotors with hundreds of photos:

Supermarine Spitfire MJ772 type VS509 (T9)

Have a look at the other Warbirds as well, itīs well worth to invest a few minutes .

Their webmaster is quite active in a german forum and put up an own page with a lot of details from various Warbirds, a wealth of pictures:

walkarounds - also drumrumdabbe

Videos you can find at their page or directly here:

MDorstFreiburg - YouTube

These guys are very open minded and there is a weekly update of their running projects. According to the german thread (running since 2008 with 122 pages) all they ask is privacy for some of the owners. All pictures and videos are copyrighted, but if you ask nicely........

As iīm living just a few miles north of the runway i canīt wait to hear that sound again and see her flying!

Enjoy, Rainer
