Post How to keep current? . . .

For many pilots one of the most agonising times can be post FTO and before landing that first job (no pun intended). As easy as it is to go to my local flying club/school to do some hours, what I'd love to know is peoples ideas and recommendations on staying current with IR and multi-engine before getting that F.O. position?
PS I'm in the Greater Manchester area, so any local information would be very much appreciated.
