My G96 works just fine on the yoke of my C206 without any external antenna.

Interesting. I had a few issues, admittedly some years ago, and now routinely plug in an external antenna (Maplin, 15 or 20 quid) and stick it on the dash with a clear view of the sky. Should perhaps try again w/o antenna.

I have used the iPad 2 and iPhone 4 for some little while in the cockpit at various times for various reasons. I have also used both in locations where the GPS is not supported by a mobile connection or WiFi. FWIW I have come to the conclusion, as others have said, that the GPS is not reliable and not fit for purpose if you want / need to be assured of continued reception - it has nothing to do with the app that you are running at the time. That doesnt mean to say that both arent useful devices and nor does it mean that the GPS service doesnt work, simply that it is not as reliable as a dedicated GPS.

It would seem there are two GPSs that are compatible with the iPad - it would be interesting to hear from anyone that has used these - in theory they should enable uninterupted service.

Best of luck.

Stick to round dials.

From " Flying Mag " today........

Pad Pilot Safety Alert

The release by Apple of a new operating system for the iPad, iOS 5, has raised concerns among aviation app providers that pilots’ iPads might lose charts or even entire applications without the user’s knowledge.

The issue has to do with Apple’s decision to let the new operating system delete files at its discretion if it were to run low on space. In a worst-case scenario, a pilot might add a video or download a new app only to have the new operating system delete charts from the application database. When the pilot tried to pull up the chart to fly an approach, it would simply not be there.

This is only a concern for pilots if their iPad is running low on storage space. As you probably know, different models of iPad have different amounts of drive space on them, which is used for storing files used for applications and data, which can include music, videos and photographs. According to an iPad expert from Apple, who spoke with us on condition of anonymity as he was not authorized to speak on the subject, there is no way at this time for users to safeguard certain apps. The issue affects all apps, not just aviation ones.

Hilton Goldstein, president of Hilton Software, developer of the popular app WingX Pro, recommends not upgrading to the new OS on your iPad or iPhone. If you already have made the change, however, or if you have a new iPhone 4S, on which the new OS is native, unfortunately you can’t downgrade. In that case Goldstein suggests keeping “several gigabytes” of storage free as a safety measure.

For its part, ForeFlight recommends keeping extra space handy, and adds that it’s a good idea to turn off cell reception on your device (if it is so equipped), which is especially important with iOS 5, it says, “since your iPad only removes data from apps if it is downloading something, and you can’t be downloading if you’re not connected to the Internet.”

Numerous application developers, including Hilton Software and ForeFlight, have petitioned Apple to change the way the new OS handles storage, but so far Apple has not responded with any changes or proposed changes to what seems an ill-considered storage management scheme.

For a full technical brief on how to safeguard your data with the new iOS, check out the blog on the subject at Foreflight.com.

Absolutely appalling, but not untypical of the arrogant behaviour of what I call the Church of Jobs.

They obviously had a Politburo session at which they determined that an Approved Church Member will not detect a difference if some app data is deleted, which I am sure is correct.

The problem is that there are some people out there who quite like the Ipad hardware (a nice screen, a good battery life, basically) and are desperately trying to use it for something slightly serious.

IOS5 is a load of crap. Iplayer crashes regularly...

Having to keep a "few gigs" free to avoid the risk of apps getting quietly deleted, is outrageous, especially on the 8GB model.

I will probably stick to using ours for in-house media playing and get a top end Android tablet someday. A good one of those costs as much as an Ipad but at least it isn't so crippled on interfacing.

How does one downgrade to the previous IOS?

According to Apple: "iOS 5.0.1 beta [released to developers today] introduces a new way for developers to specify files that should remain on device, even in low storage situations."

Yes, some details here.

Goodreader have just updated their app to have a "downloads" folder, into which presumably downloaded documents go if downloaded via their www download feature.

This folder appears invisible to 3rd party drag/drop apps like Iphone Explorer, but I haven't tried it with Itunes (which cannot browse any folders as such anyway; it is a purely 'sync' app).

I am getting a bit sick of i-devices... Our Iphone4 and Ipad2 have both been swapped (under warranty, though it took an "appointment with an Apple Genius" at the "Genius Bar" - a half day affair) due to various subtle hardware faults. I have just sent back an Airport wifi access point which turns out to not have a web config (unlike everything else on the market) making it a right hassle to configure / administer remotely because it needs the special Apple config utility. There are loads of compatibility issues between the iphone and ipad and non-Apple wifi access points which have been around for years and which works fine with everything else.

Intend to try my iPad in cockpit and see how it goes (in addition to panel GPS) but haven't got around to it yet. What do people use as a knee strap then?

Like some others on here, I start from a doubtful position on iPad use for in-flight GPS. I do like Apple stuff and have iPhone 4, MacBook Pro etc. though there are always frustrations. The Genius Bar is a nightmare in our area (Sheffield) as the queue is always nearly out of the store, and that's with an appointment system!

IOS 5.0.1 now available generally - at least my iPad just told me so.

As I understand, there is now a new policy for developers that allows them to create a space somehow that is NOT synched with iCloud, but not deleted without warning either.

It's now up to the developers to make use of this new policy, obviously. So most likely you are going to have to wait for an app update after you've updated to 5.0.1 in order to be sure that your approach plates and such are not going to disappear all of a sudden.

I have 5.0.1 on my Ipad2 and yes there is also a new version of Goodreader which implements a "Download" directory.

Fortunately its Documents directory remains accessible using Iphone Explorer, for simple drag/drop operations.

In the meantime Memory Map have "updated" their IOS app, removing the feature for transferring QCT charts via WIFI This company is going from stupid to really stupid.

Oh, and hurray. We can finally install the IOS 5.0.1 update without needing iTunes!

Re GoodReader. I have the update and the Download directory too, but I think that was created to circumvent the 5.0.0 policy. With 5.0.1 now being deployed I would expect GoodReader to come up with yet another update that works according to Apples policy in this regard.

Yes I think GR did that yesterday. Can't test it however as I don't "download" stuff into it.
