Okay, so this is probably a really dumb question, but when i am training for my nppl, how would i fly solo to attain my license without a license?

Basically you do have a license...but a student licence that allows you to do all the training flight (solo and dual), supervised by an FTO.

I always assumed I was flying "on" my instructor's licence.

As is, I have to say, "Your Medical Declaration is your Student Pilot Licence". There is, in the UK, as you know, no such thing as a Student Pilot Licence, neither is one required, as Article 52 makes clear.

BTW, you don't sound nearly as convincing as Dai, dear boy.

Ask your instructor if you can do a solo navex through cloud "on" his licence.

I still have a medical certificate that states that it includes the privileges of a Student Pilot's Licence which of course did exist before the ANO was amended, and the only documentation required became a valid Medical Certificate. Old memories die hard.
