IMC Rating privileges include, inter alia, SVFR flight with a reduced in-flight visibility requirement of 3km and IFR flight in Class D or E airspace but not IFR in Class A.
What are the requirements for flight in class A airspace then? Or what ratings does one need to hold? Or is it reserved for commercial traffic only. If say I have an MEP-IR is that "enough" to fly in Class A?

Just trying to understand the conditions that must be met if theoretically I wanted to fly in class A airspace. Lets say I wanted to fly from e.g. Blackpool to somewhere in the south at FL80 which would mean flying through Daventry Class A (if this is even allowed).

Thanks.

To fly in Class A airspace, you require either an Instrument Rating (for IFR) - and of course an IFR-equipped aircraft - or a Special VFR clearance for VFR.

This Airspace Classification Chart illustrates the IFR/VFR differences.

And of course you'd have to comply with all IFR procedures. You cannot simply appear on the frequency, announce your intentions to bimble about in class A and think that everybody's going to accept that. Even if you happen to have an IR and an IFR capable plane.

So you'd have to file an IFR flight plan, wash that to the computer in Brussels (which checks, amongst other things, compliance with various minimum altitudes and compliance with mandatory equipment carriage) and so on and so forth. But since you have an IR, I suspect you will know how that works.

Also, I have never heard anybody get a *transit* through class A under SVFR rules. It seems that SVFR in class A is typically only granted if you have a specific reason to be there. E.g. if your destination cannot be practically reached otherwise (CIs for instance). So I would not expect you to be allowed to cross the Daventry Class A at FL80 under SVFR, for instance.

You can get a transit through CTRs only, and I know a lot of pilots cutting corners on Heathrow CTR using SVFR.

Maybe I am wrong but I was under the impression that (in the uk anyway) that Special VFR was only available in a Control Zone and therefore not in a Control Area, e.g. Airways

You cannot get SVFR through enroute Class A airspace.

The Class A has to touch the ground.
