Foreign licenses

My friend has a Japanese PPL and would like to fly in the UK. What does he need to do to fly solo - a license conversion of some sort or what?

At the moment, nothing, his Japanese licence is rendered valid. A club checkout and if they are happy nothing more. It will all change when Europe takes over.
