You don't mention where - it's a rather large country.
For the legalities, you need casa to validate your uk ppl, as said, it can take a lot of time. You also probably need an ASIC (aviation security ID), which will also take a while.
Short answer - yes, but it may not be worth the time and effort. However, it is an amazing place to fly, consider doing it dual.

Wasn't it so that you can only get the ASIC once you are actually in Australia, and the PPL validaion only once you have the ASIC? And as both take a week or so, would be practically speaking impossible for a flying holiday, unless you have time to wait for the process to end while actually sitting on your hands somewhere in Oz?

Thanks for the info everyone. I'm going to be in Melbourne for the most part and then up near Cairns.
Three weeks in all but but sounds like I might not have time to get the relevant docs.
Still I'll look into it and see what can be done.
Thanks again
Matt

It can be done, but with three weeks you're cutting it fine. I've posted on here a while ago explaining the whole process, an advanced search should bring it up.
In a nutshell:
- authorize (and, of course, pay!) the CAA to divulge your details
- fill in the CASA validation forms, send off to Oz
- fill in the ASIC forms, get the various docs together, pay and send off.
Whole process about 6 weeks or so.
Once in Oz, whoever issues you the ASIC needs to do an immigration check and then can actually issue the card (having done the background stuff beforehand). This then needs to find you.
All in all, unless you want to do a flying holiday (which is why I got mine), it's a whole lot easier and cheaper just to fly with a local instructor.
You also mention Cairns - the North QLD Aeroclub will not rent a/c to overseas pilots, validation or not (this info is 2 years old).
