Farnham Surrey - Schools, Clubs, GA
Hi
I'm coming back to the UK from NZ for 9 months or so from April 2011 and will be locating in Farnham, Surrey for the duration of my trip.
I have a CPL with single and twin ratings and while in the UK I'd like to get involved with a Club, School, GA outfit as a volunteer / casual worker(employee) type of thing.
I'm up for getting involved in anything - general admin, handling, helping with maintenance (ex-RAF Aircraft Electrician), hopefully even a little flying.
Not coming from the Farnham area originally I don't know what's where and wondered if you guys might be able to suggest a few places to try and or maybe a couple of names to speak to. Feel free to PM if you'd prefer.
Really looking forward to getting my hands on.......
Many thanks.

Lasham is not far from there, and while it's a gliding site, they've got lots of tugs and winches to help with! Might be worth a look.

Thanks very much for the info guys.
Blackbushe, I've heard of. Looks like a big operation, I'll pop along.
Popham, I'll definitely drop in and have a chat..
I just saw Lasham on Google Earth and looked them up too, so they'll be getting a visit.
Still trawling Google and Google Earth - it's taking shape

Closest airfield to Farnham is Tongham, with the bonus of the Hogs Back Brewery off-sales on site!
No flying clubs though, and limited flying due to the slope of the rwy! Last I knew had a Stearman & an Auster there.

The local flying clubs have been about covered.
The "micro" brewery at Tongham is definitely worth a visit especially for a cask of "bright" TEA (Traditional English Ale).
The best pub was probably the Bat & Ball, but haven't lived in the area for about 6 years.

Slightly further away (at 28 miles) you've got Redhill Aerodrome. Welcome to Redhill Aerodrome
It houses a few flying schools and microlight training, as well as helicopter training. There is also a maintenance outfit there.

Gliding & Air Cadet Flying at Odiham
Hercfeend,
RAF Odiham is only 8 miles from Farnham. There you will find 618 Volunteer Glider Squadron which operates four Grob 109 Vigilants, and as its name suggests uses volunteer flying instructors, although the maintenance is by full-time staff. I'm told that being an instructor is quite a commitment, and probably not for you if you have young children or if your wife does not have her own hobbies/interests at the weekend.
618 Volunteer Gliding Squadron
There is also the Kestrel Gliding Club at Odiham which is part of the RAF Gliding and Soaring Association. They have to maintain a balance of service to civilian members, but if you are genuinely willing to get your hands dirty maintaining aircraft, vehicles and other assets on a regular basis, you could be looked upon kindly for associate membership, which offers gliding and motor gliding at very competitive rates.
Kestrel Gliding Club — Royal Air Force Gliding and Soaring Association
I would also second the comments about Popham. Its a very friendly place, and volunteers are needed for marshalling at the many events they hold each year. I've shared the cost of flights in several aircraft there.
