Flying in South Africa - JoBurg
Hi. I am going to JoBurg in two weeks time and hope to get one off from work. I was hoping to fly for a couple of hours and was wondering if there is anyone here who can recommend a flying school out of JoBurg airport. A C152 is fine.
Thanks

Jo'burg has 3 General Aviation fields and a big International Airport. No chance of finding a C152 there.
Rand Airport to the South.
Grand Central to the North.
Lanseria to the West.
There are 3 schools at GC and while you check out their brochures you can have a bacon sandwich at the Fly-Inn Cafe, watching the Cessnas and Robinsons doing their stuff.
GC has excellent road access from Jo'burg after 9am and before 5pm.
Rand has a lot of character and a lot of schools, but a bit difficult to access.
Lanseria is in the boondocks.
Google is your friend. I am not going to mention the names of schools, I will get my knuckles wrapped by the Mods.
I was at GC all last week, it's buzzing!

It's been a while since I was there, but the 3 fields mentioned above were what sprang to my mind too.
Remember 5700 amsl and ISA+25 gives nearly 8000' DA, so Warriors/Skyhawks become 2-seaters.
Some nice flying country and good value flying. Why not try something different - Citabria/Tiger Moth ... There looked to be a variety of options at Rand last I looked.

There are actually eight GA airfields in the Johannesburg area plus OR Tambo International.
Grand Central
Lanseria
Rand
Krugersdorp (perhaps the friendliest and least intimidating security)
Benoni Brakpan
Springs
Panorama (mostly ultralights)
Tedderfield (no training)
My choice would be Krugersdorp Flying Club or the training school next door.
Another sound choice would be Heidelberg - a few miles south of Johannesburg but an easy and short drive and like Krugersdorp, it doesn't have an identity crisis and thinks it's a major international airport with all the silly security measures.

If you have the time Rand is worth a visit for any aviation nut. GC was a good training field with a few schools when i was there. Mark is very correct though, try and rent as many horses as you can. Think the exchange rate is ok at the moment so should be very good value.
