AIAA - difficult?

Hi,
I am planning lots of journeys I want to do once I have my UK PPL (by end of Spring with luck!). With friends in North Yorkshire, I'm looking at trips to Beverley (Linley Hill) and such.
From down here in the south east, the route obviously goes through several AIAAs along the way.
Any comments appreciated.

- I guess these are generally quiet at the weekends?
- I presume that if the LARS is operating its easy to get a service in order to get safely across the AIAA?
- I presume that if the relevant LARS unit is closed / does not respond that its farily safe to trundle through the area?
Any comments appreciated.

What you say is right...no problems with AIAAs at weekends. The main thing to remember is to stay above 1000ft (which you would anyway)because military types (if present) tend to fly in the vicinity of 500ft, if not lower.
But do get a radar service if you can.

No fast military traffic at weekends, but a significant amouunt of gliders/microlights in this region. I would not advise transiting this zone in the absence of at least a FIS. Leeming or Linton sometimes provides LARS at weekends, failing that Leeds will cover some of that area.

Basically its not a problem. Waddington will always talk to you on 127.35 except over Christmas and the new year. They are one of the few LARS to operate at the weekend. I don't ask them for a radar service unless the vis is very poor, and for your first few trips I suggest not going if the wx is marginal.
R313 (Scampton) and the other MATZ are rarely active at weekends (talk to Waddington) so you can normally fly direct.
You'll like it up here. Landing fees low or free. Breighton is well worth a visit - lots of nice aircraft to look at in the hangars.

Andy-go high !
As you leave EGTB start a slow climb stepping under the TMA untill you reach FL50 by the time you have got just north of aylesbury you will be able to track the GAM vor.
At FL50 you can fly all day and meet practicly no one the radar cover is good and you can pick up the nav aids at a good range ,your TAS will be better as will the fuel burn and you can usualy enjoy a smooth ride.
If you chose your level well you can some times get some good tail winds and even if the wind is on the nose the higher TAS and the smooth ride will make the trip seem shorter.
Some times you can realy get lucky i once had to get a PA28-161 from glasgow to EGTB with a stiff wind from the north i climbed to FL95 for a smooth ride and took full advantage of the tailwind , the flight time was 2H 06M !

A and C: Thanks - I like your suggestion of going high (just need a day with the cloudbase high enough... its hard to remember summer at this point in the season isn't it!)
Wonder if we know each other at all - I am at BAFC on Saturday mornings as a rule.
