Unhappy Rochester Support

Just in case anyone has not already seen it, Rochester are appealing for letters of support by the end of the month. Details are reported on both the Flyer web site (http://www.flyer.co.uk) and our own Action for Airfields site (http://www.airfields.org.uk).

Interesting to note that the firm of consultants engaged by Medway Council are the same as those employed by Ipswich Borough Council (Ipswich Airport now being, of course, no more).

Letter sent earlier today as a result of a prompt from a friend. The person dealing with the subject at the firm of consultants appears to be friendly and efficient. Lets all get letters out there!! Anyone wishing to have a sample text or the address please e-mail me.

I understand that their future was subject to a temporary reprieve rather than made secure. You can view a potted history of the planning battle at http://www.airfields.org.uk/rochester.htm

The public inquiry into the local plan as it relates to the airfield is due in April, and the current operators lease is until 2004.

In the meantime the local authorities seem intent on pursuing their ambition to close and redevelop the airfield.

The five options laid out in the council's leaflet are as follows:

A - No change to current airfield layout, with continuation of current activities.

B - Reconfiguration of 02/20 runways, one to be 800m and the other parallel relief runway 600m. Loss of cross runway which would be redeveloped as technology/business park.

C - Single 800m hard runway to replace 02/20 grass runways. Loss of cross runway. Larger area to be developed as technology parks.

D - Closure of airfield. Mixed development of 1000 houses, community facilities and business park with some open space.

E - Closure of airfield, with 200 houses and larger business park with some open space.

The guys at the airport are asking that any support lists Option A as the preferred option, followed by Option B and C.

They've also just spent a lot of time refurbishing their clubhouse, and have a whole list of fly-ins and events planned for the coming year. We owe it to them to give our full support, so get writing and emailing, it might be enough to tip the balance!

The lady at Atkins read my submission, noted the main points and wrote back asking for supplementary information within an hour.

When I sent a response she obviously read it and responded sensibly.

At least they are reading and responding to our letters, so it _must_ be a worthwhile exercise to write to them.

Incidentally, Atkins are one of the biggest engineering consultancies in the country, so it is not surprising that they have been asked to do both Ipswich and this...no conspiracy methinks.
