NPPL after by-pass surgery

Gentlemen

A friend of mine has expressed an interest in learning to fly. I have offered him a 'taster' flight in my group owned Grumman AA5 and am waiting for a suitable day to give him the best possible introduction.

But, he had heart by-pass surgery about five years ago. Will this preclude him for gaining a PPL/NPPL?

The person who can best answer this (as far as the NPPL is concerned) is your friend's GP. Please ask your friend to direct his GP to NPPL - General Introduction to the NPPL medical requirements | Medical | Safety Regulation .

If the GP has any further queries, he/she should contact NPLG Ltd who will be able to assist. If the GP has any clinical queries, NPLG will provide him/her with the contact details for an NPPL Medical Advisor.

Your friend should not contact NPLG or the CAA directly; that is the responsibility of his GP.

Regarding JAA Class 2 medical queries, please direct your friend to Medical | Safety Regulation .

Is he driving a motor car?
if so he can get an NPPL
Could he drive an HGV?
if so he can get an NPPL and carry passengers.
I have a pacemaker and now fly NPPL,could even fly PPL if I paid £750/year in medicals

Thank you both.

Lister, he certainly drives a car. I'm not so sure about HGVs.

Do I take it that there are two tiers of NPPL, one where you can fly solo and one which allows you to carry passengers?

Really you would be better asking this question in the Medical and Health Forum here at pprune?

These two documents should give your friend and his GP more information.

Although not as serious as by-pass surgery, I had three holes in my heart closed up in 2003-2004 (ventricular septal defect closure), although my medical examination at Gatwick did take 5 hours, and 10 months to be certified, I did walk away with a first class medical. If he passes all the tests, he'll be fine.
