Solo
Well, it finally happened. For once I had a lesson booked on a day when Goodwood wasn't facing the kind of weather normally reserved for Indian monsoon season, and after a few circuts I managed to scare my instructor into getting out. . .. .The less said about the landing the better (although once I decided to stop faffing around 5 foot above 32L - and it took me a while - it wasn't too bad), but I've got those magic first few minutes P1 logged. I'm off down pub.

Let me add my congratulations as well!. .. .What's wrong with faffing about 5 foot up, though?. .. .

Well done Evo, from now on it gets better. Next big milestone is first solo navex, then first solo land away.. .. .It was a lovely day for it too, I thought I was grounded at 8:00 by thick fog, but it cleared & by 10:30 I was up over the clouds in North Kent.

Congrats EVO 7. .. .Once you've done a solo - you are a pilot! You just need to get the rest of the course and the exams sorted now!. .. .BTW, if you find that your second solo feels not as good as your first, don't worry its pretty common and usually a sign of increasing awareness, not deteriorating skill.. .. .Cheers. .. .F3G

Thanks for the kind words, chaps.. .. .I'm still on a huge high, of course. It's just getting better as it sinks in. At the time it felt a bit like just another circuit - apart from the first time you glance to your right and there's nobody there - but hey, I'm fairly busy in the circuit and there's not too much time to think about it. Afterwards it's not just another circuit. I've done plenty of circuits where my instructor hasn't done anything, but that's the first one where he couldn't. Cool . .. .The other feeling I've got is a realization of how little I actually know, which I haven't really had since I started learning. Back then everything happened too fast, the RT could have been in greek and I was only doing one of the six things that needed doing. That feeling passed, but I guess it never really went away - I just got used to a friendly FI covering the things I was missing. Now I'm probably doing five of the six - might even manage the lot sometimes - but suddenly there's nobody to cover the one thing I might have missed. It's a big sky up there and I don't have a tenth of the awareness of it that my instructor has. I'm not overly worried, but it's a useful eyeopener.... .. .

Many congratulations! . .. .As others have said, first solo nav and first solo land away are high points, but in the shorter term you can look forward to solo consolidation circuits: up there on your own for thirty minutes or an hour you get time to appreciate it in a way that you don't necessarily do on the first solo. Have fun.

Excellent News Evo7! Know just how you feel! Like you say, when you look to the right and see an empty seat, it's totally surreal Great to hear news like this, keeps me going while I wait for the clouds to clear up again Best of luck with the rest of your training!

Nice one Evo. Perhaps you can give me some tips? I keep trying to scare the cr@p out of my instructor but either he's got nerves of steel or I'm not doing it right as he hasn't let me out on my own yet.. .. .Congrats and well done.
